If I shake my pin-pointer it goes off like it's sitting on the mother load, if I push down on the point of it, it goes off like it's sitting on the mother load. This makes finding a target pretty hard to do...... Any ideas....????

Thanks

Is this normal usage? If so, I bet the unit needs a trip to the shop. Sounds like the coil broke.

Mine does the same thing when you press down on the end of it. It was like that brand new out of the box.
Sometimes I need to take the battery out of it for a few seconds to reset it. I have to do that when it starts going off for no reason.
The pinpointer also seems to need a battery with a full charge. It doesn't function well with a half used battery.

I would send it back to the garrett factory. Mine was broke and they sent a new one back in two weeks

WOW !!! ive got the same issue... bought it brand new in march !!! beeps at everthing !!! it cost me a mark on my 1st real coin of a lifetime for me that i'll be posting :BangHead:

Love my Garrett. Yes, new battery is helpful when it keeps going off. I clean the tip often but get some noise sometime pushing down hard in the hole but nothing like 'the motherload".
Try the new battery...then send off for a new one. Good luck.

I've had my Pro Pointer for about a year and a half and it has just started acting up. It will beep when in the hole but will keep beeping after I remove it from the hole and the only way to get it to stop is to turn it off. This is kind of an erratic thing, but it is very annoying and I can't trust it to provide an accurate signal anymore. I was trying to finish up this season before sending it in to Garrett, but I may not make it. I'm hunting a very productive field right now, so I may just buy a new one.

I've never taken one apart but being the electronic engineer that I am, my gut tells me that when pressure is applied to the tip it changes the resistance (and therefore the inductance) of the coil, which will trigger the program to recognize the anomaly and beep. I often use my pinpointer to break plugs open by poking through the dirt, and it does occasionally beep with the pressure. All I do is relieve the tip pressure and rotate the pointer inside the plug; if I don't hear more beeping, I know the initial beep was probably false. With persistent false beeping I know the battery needs a change. It has yet to continue after some of the minor troubleshooting I've described here.

Change the battery. If that doesn't help, clean it off really good, and put a better quality battery in it. Often I've noticed that mineral dust in the dirt can set it off if any sticks to the tip with the dirt. Low quality batteries can also limit the pointer's power consumption from what it "expects" to draw.

Change the battery, always works for me. Seem to only get half he life out of the battery before it goes bonkers.

Thanks Daryn and cti4sw. I have been using Energizers, and had changed the battery I think about a month ago, but it has been getting some heavy use lately. I'll throw a new battery in it and see what happens and then change the battery more frequently.

Energizer isn't a low quality brand, I think you'd be okay continuing with those. By low quality I meant dollar store brands. Keep the tool clean, I clean mine about once a week and I also keep a spare set of batteries in my car. GL
