I'm thinking it's more of a stone guard for a sickle bar mower or something.
Hey relevent Were there ever round balls made of iron and not lead?

You’re probably right because I’ve never seen one I barely know what a sickle really is

The tringle pieces at the bottom edge are blades. They do the cha cha left and right to cut.
The stone guards defend the blades from rocks.

I'll look for a video.

This is a newer model.
There are walk behind types too. I got a real old one up and running for Dad before. Don't know where it ended up.

But the principle is the same. Cha cha cha.

Should not have been. At least not for handheld arms other than blunderbusses or cannon.

Lead does not remove metal when being fired through barrels. Giving well cared for barrels a longer life.
And because it can upset /deform a little (more so with more pure lead) it helps engage barrel rifling . Even with patched round balls.
Or just expand a little in the case of smooth bores helping reduce blowby of powder gasses.

A very desperate soul could shoot a steel ball out of a rifle. As long as it's not one of mine!

I have grape shot I have a cannonball were these canisters full of little metal balls. I’m still trying to find a magnet

I’ll think I’ll just call it a old stele
