Made it into the 1700s....1792 or 93 France Louis XVI 2 Sol

Why this was in my Uncle's backyard in Pennsylvania and only 2 inches down is beyond me but I can finally say that I dug a 1700s coin. The only other coin was a 1918 Wheat Penny. Going back tomorrow to hit some of the farm fields.

Nice find for Portage PA! And that has been in the ground for a while, it wasn't dropped recently. I would hunt that area close, might be a site there. Coins like that are usually not a random drop.

Sometimes land in the country gets tilled and turned even close to the house -- maybe that accounts for the shallow depth? Or, could have been a keepsake someone lost 50-100 years ago? Hard to say, but it's yours now and it's a fine piece to be sure! Congrats!

Depth doesn't mean much and often doesn't account for age. I've had surface-find NJ copper and a 360 year old cob 3" down, both from untilled areas. Great French copper!
