This idea is for picking up magnetic materials only.
It is mounted on a luggage carry case here, but I foresee it being
attached to a baby stroller.
Use: carry things in the stroller at flea markets, craft faires, or outdoor events
where people are likely to drop things.

I used a very powerful (75-pound pull) rare earth magnet in each of the
PVC pipes shown below. I have not checked it out yet, but here in California
we have lots of outdoor, grass cover events where is should work.

What do you think?

A lot of home improvement places rent or loan those so you can clean off the roofing nails from the yard around your house after striping off old roof shingles.

There are lots of sources on eBay, but I used

"magnet4less" seller

http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQfgtpZ1QQfrppZ25QQsassZmagnet4less

He seems to be a wholesale supplier, and has good prices,
and a wide variety.
My next purchase; something I can put in a water-tight container and throw in that
pond next to the high school.

Warning - - those are POWERFUL magnets, and it's easy to get pinched.
You have to put it inside something so you can separate the grain-sized
iron filings that cling to the surface and are hard to remove.
By putting it in a PVC tube with a screw-off end, you can hold the end with
the filings on it, dip the tube to the other end, so the magnet slides down,
and the filings will then fall off the end of the PVC.

That stroller jobby needs to have big 'offroad' tires. Like on a jogging stroller. Then you could take it on the beach!

Where can I buy the magnets? Thanks, RuffandTuff

Harbor Freight Tools. They have some that are about 2 1/2 X 10 that have a screw eye that you can replace with a bolt to make a pickup as wide as needed. If you build one, a good hint is to place a piece of plastic tarp around to help get the junk & magnetite they attract off. They also sell one that is like a speaker magnet on a broom stick. And I think they even have the one pictured above.
