As you stated, the "pointed hat" is a common theme in DeGrazia's paintings:

Yes, when I asked about its significance, I was told that it was a hat worn by Navaho priests or holy men. I have never seen one photographed but if it is a sacred object, I wouldn't expect to.
There is one kachina that uses something similar which supports the idea.
