Found at a homesite in Hanover Mass whose ownership traces back to a member of the Mass 18th Regiment and active between 1775 and 1781. Possibly owned by Amos Turner.

Outstanding button and provenance! Does the same family still own the property?

Yes, what Barker said. 18th Continental Reg. formed from Phinney's, Scammon's and Paterson's Ma. regiments. Renumbered as the 12th Ma. in 1777. Saw action at Lake Champlain and at Saratoga. A lot of these men were actually from Maine, from what I have read. Consolidated with the 15th Cont. Reg. in 1777 and designated Samuel Brewer's Reg. GREAT FIND!

Hi Rhode Hog; As hogge said that puts your button squarely at 1775 - 1777. Now I will send you a link with Amos Turners Enlistment Papers on it when my pc starts to work right again ok. Maybe even a picture of him himself ok. PEACE:RONB

There was an Amos Turner and an Amos Turner jr. from Medway Ma. that served in Rev War. Cannot find, from 18th Cont. muster rolls his name though. Doesn't mean he didn't serve in that Reg. Just muster roll from that time doesn't have his name.

Great save there! It is important to get these Rev War pewters out of the ground and preserve them before they rot away to nothing. You have a nice specimen there, congrats!

Hi hogge; I'm not surprised. Record Keeping back then was very poor indeed. Here is why you could not find him. The Continental Army's 18th Regiment MERGED with the MA 12th Regiment in 1775. Many of the soldiers wore their Original Uniform Coats with them during the whole Rev War. That is why you can't find him listed on the 18th MA Reg Muster Rolls. He must be on the 12th Regiments Muster Roll ok. PEACE:RONB
