Massive nickel haul

Stopped by an out of town bank and asked for rolls of nickels. Teller came back from the vault with 44 rolls--all customer wrapped. As he was putting them in the tray I spotted a roll marked, "1941". I thought this could potentially be a unique batch. Couldn't wait to get home and see what I got. When I finally did, the roll marked "1941" had all 1941 nickels. Same with the roll marked, "1940"--all 1940 nickels. The majority of the rest of the rolls were full of old nickels: mostly 1940s and 1950s with some 1938, 1939, and a LOT of 1960s. Several rolls had all newer nickels in them. I was hoping to find a roll of war nickels or Buffaloes but, alas, it wasn't meant to be. I did find a 1942S war nickel. I think it was just missed. I did find an additional handful of keepers: 6 x 1938P, 1 x 1938S, 1 x 1939S, 1 x 1939D(!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!), 1 x 1949S, and 1 x 1955P. I'd been looking for a 1939D for two years! I probably searched through over 150 boxes looking for one. Incredible. It was the final coin I needed to complete my fifth and final Harris folder.

I keep all the 1940s and 1950s which are shown in a pile in the photos. The final tally of those is 716 !!!!!! A major score. This had to be the result of somebody's long hours of coin roll hunting. Perhaps this is part of an estate which a relative dumped at the bank. Who knows. In 3 years I've never had a bank score like this. Hard work finally paid off. HH to all the hobbyists.

Nice haul on the nickels! Careful of being too dramatic with the font size and color though.

A few years ago, a member (by name of Mrs.CRH) posted a few posts in normal font size, but used a color (pink, if it matters).

The moderators came along and jumped all over the posts because they violated the "don't use large or colored font" rule.

They may have relaxed a bit with age. Or, maybe they just have something against pink.

Nice haul on the nickels! Careful of being too dramatic with the font size and color though.

I had to go check my remaining nickels collected before 1983.

Back then ('82-'83) I dumped a bunch of nickels which were labeled by date and were in grey and blue coin holders. At first I thought that they might have been mine... but the pre-print on the grey holders doesn't match the ones I still have.

Funny to see that I wasn't the only one to dump coins labeled by date. And... I did dump some crappy looking silver war nickels which had only silver melt value then too.

At the time a McD's single cheeseburger was $2.00 and the nickels were still findable and the silver bonus was only about $2.

Half hunters used to discard 40%'ers in the day. Different climate to be sure.

From what i remember the 2 rolls showing in the pics were the only ones with that type of wrapper. I see you are a new member. Hope you feel better.
