In reality, you just can't put anything in for the letters. It's suppose to match a formula like e=mc2.
e is energy, m is mass, c is distance and that is squared. You have to fill in with actual values for m & c to get e.

Frank ... as I said earlier, it is a course in "Common Core Mathematics".

Military and political answer. Thread will probably go away but here goes:

1(x) stands for "One deserter, who commands only himself (x=1)."

5(y) stands for "5 Taliban commanders, each in charge of a minimum 1,000 troops. (y=5,000)"

Therefore, 1=5,000

Also have a pic of the professor in class explaining it at the whiteboard.
