Thanks, next time we get some sunshine here I'll get a better translucent of the pw point - very thin and almost razor sharp. The hammer is the most complete one that I've found at our site.

I see a big smiley face....that's funny ;D your spirits crack me up....
Really nice finds...

what is that in the pictures 2 and 3 , top left side.it kind of square?

I think that the groove on that one "hammer" (is that right, hammer?) shows that the artifacts you and Larson find are older than they have been credited for. Nice finds!! As always beautiful points and scrapers!! Keep it up Kelly!!

What would you say the little square piece is in the second and third pic? I like your "biscuit" mano too...what I like to call them. I've found one just like it made out of quartz.

I was wondering if someone would notice that. It's a very nicely worked chert square scraper (3/4" x 1/2" x 1/16").

Thanks, I know Steve has found a number of these with very little damage. I'm sorry to say but I think plowing has gotten to a lot of them. It's not uncommon to see pieces that show part of the groove when we're out looking. I agree that the pieces we find cover a long time period and many generations. It's just amazing that it's all from the same place. Another observation I have and Steve can correct me if I'm wrong, is we find very little "post contact" pieces. Things like trade beads or anything that can suggest actual contact with the white man are rare finds.

In my reading it was described that the Mandan arived in your area no earlier than the 1500's is that incorrect?

Information that I've read that included carbon dating of items to 1300 and earlier. The study was done with items from Scattered Village which was an early Mandan village about a mile from the one we hunt. We find the same pottery designs, styles of bone tools, points, scrapers and things that were taken in the Scattered Village excavation. This attached Ch 05 from the study has some of the only scientifically done dating on any Mandan artifacts I've been able to find. On page 5.40 there's an interestin variety of date. There also some pre/post contact information discussed.

Let me know what you decide on the 1500's date. I'd have to really dig to find it, but I've read excerpts from earhly French fur trade journals that these site were already uninhabited by mid 1730. I think there's a lot we don't know or aren't supposed to know.

Cool info..thank you so much

we find pieces that are 5000 years old pelican lake, oxbow, duncan-hanna, etc
these are from people before the mandan

i am thinking it is a knife that was mounted along with one or two more blades in a bone handle
it is bifacial and the sides are parallel
just my guess
one thing for sure.....it rules!IMG_2710.webp
