Mercury Dimes IN THE TRASH

So today I dumped about $500, and the teller was asking me what I did with all the dimes. Well I just happened to have a Mercury dime in my pocket, and I said I was looking for ones that look like this. She looks at my 1916 Merc and says this:

"Oh i've thrown so many of these in the trash, I thought they were foreign?"

I told her that they are they are US dimes, and they stopped making those in 1945, and the Roosevelt's came in 1946. I told her if she ever finds any more, to please save them for me instead of throwing them away. She said she would save them all for me (they know me as the dimes guy).

At the next bank I stopped at, I decided to ask her if she finds a lot of dimes like this (handed her a merc), and she said she see's them sometimes, and that her grandpa gave her a bunch when she was a kid. She said she'd save them for me if she finds any, she didn't want them. She also told me that it would be perfectly fine if I bring rolls back after searching to exchange for new ones. She even said they'd mark the ones I brought back so i'd never get the ones I searched already. AWESOME!

sounds like you have a good relationship with some tellers and when they are willing to help you with your CRHing - you can't ask for more than that.

I would love to ask a bank to be able to do that.. I just don't want to give them too much info so they could use it against me somehow. Like reboxing dumps knowing I'd take them

It pains me to know there are Mercury dimes in a landfill somewhere that will probably never be found again. It also makes me wonder just how many silver coins have arrived at a similar fate, or been lost in the ocean, etc.

As for the teller who offered to let me pickup/dump at their bank, she basically said it's better that way so they don't have to order any more dimes each week, and aren't short on dimes because i'm dumping them elsewhere. They are really nice there, and don't have a problem with my hobby. (It's mostly younger ladies that work there, no men.) I'm pretty sure she was talking $50-$100 tops, so i'll see how it goes. I will try not to abuse it, but it's the same bank that I yielded 22 silver dimes from $150. It's hard not to.

I could see how someone would mistake a Merc for a foreign coin. These young folks think the old small head notes look "fake".

I found a silver Roosevelt in the trash can next to a Coinstar machine once. I guess they got tired of picking it out of the reject tray and chucked it.

I try to be very polite, smile a lot, and I make it a point to always ask the teller how their day is going before I even mention what I need from the bank that day. In these last 2 months CRH, I've grown very accustomed to talking to attractive bank tellers, it seems that 19 times out of 20, I always end up getting a female teller. I will admit, I do try to be charming and well spoken. But I think just being understanding and nice goes such a long way. When I pickup I tell them i'm happy to take whatever they can spare if they can't spare a whole box, and when I dump I thank them for their patience in counting out all of my boxes full of rolls and apologize for all of the coin. I know tellers get abused by some people, and no one will go out of their way for rude people.

Anything is possible in this hobby. In April 2010, I found a 1921 Morgan in the trash next to the coin counter in my dump bank. Even now, I still can't believe it.

you have the right attitude and this is good basic advise for all CRHers.

And I'm going to have to remember to look in the trash whenever I am at one of those coin machines. Last week I found a 1990 5 pence coin in the trash when I was dumping (the trash "can/holder" was empty except for what appeared to be a small shinny dime sized coin so I couldn't resist picking it out of the trash) - but so far that's the only trash or reject coin I've found. Finding something like a morgan dollar in the trash would be amazing. I think I even saw someone post recently that they once found a CC morgan dollar in the trash next to one of these coin machines - hard to imagine.

I always think about how much silver goes in the trash from those Coinstar machines, there is absolutely no telling how much silver is at the city dumps...
