Metal Detecting a Lakeshore park YIELDS 6 coins

Metal detecting a park not too far from 19th century buildings did not yield 19th century coins unfortunately. All within 3" to 4" of the top of the turf. I seem to dig only the ones that register on my pin-pointer.

I suppose there were two targets that made my GMT detector hum but did not register on my pin-pointer I should have dug them out but did not. They might've been the 19th century coins I was after.

But not a bad bunch of 5 Canadian modern coins and one Chinese coin I think.

Thank you for the encouragement and the education, I honestly hear ya, while the benefits would outweigh the work done, a signal yielding a depth of 8" is almost guaranteed to be a coin from the 30s/40s era at least, the very low sound wasn't encouraging enough especially when the location is not too secluded, the calculations in my head included those of 1) human proximity factor 🧑‍🤝‍🧑 as I am calling it along with 2) "what the heck are you doing to the park with an 8" hole and similarly deep" factor and the 3) what-if just aluminum/bottle cap 🍬factor after all that work factor? If you multiply the 3 together, giving each factor my approximate weighting score, say, 30% x 50% x 10% , I got 1.5% encouragement to dig! ; ), I just got to find me more promising and secluded areas that do not have a lot of trash!! It just might be a tall order! The research involved appears daunting.

It hasn't been that way with me at all. I've dug 10 inches to find a clad penny, and in the same park, 10 feet away a walker half at two inches.
That's happened to me many times.
95% of these were down 3" or less. These are from the last two winters in the Vegas area.

It hasn't been that way with me at all. I've dug 10 inches to find a clad penny, and in the same park, 10 feet away a walker half at two inches.

Not all ground is the same. What you say is very true, where you are. Some areas of the country coins etc. can lie on the surface for years. I very much enjoyed detecting in the dry areas of the Southwest years ago. Found a number of things by "Eyeballing". Other areas? Many things can be 10" deep, and be modern clad. Oldmxrat is correct though. The same has happened to all of us at various times. Goes back to saying, "You just never know".

Back in 2011 we rented a cottage down the road while we built.
Had unlimited detecting on 3 properties.

Sitting there one day watching the skunk digging my
plugs out.
I soon figured it was the grubs it was after.
So I tossed the grubs away from the plug.
Couple of days later, it did a pass on the plugs.
Went over to where I tossed them, scratched around and had a snack.

nice you raise this issue to ensure that the plug is returned horseshoe-style to mitigate skunk and others having an easier time digging plugs and making the detectorist look bad

On the subject of having too many detectors and getting rid of some, I seem to be in slightly the same boat now too, having just purchased a Minelab Manticore, now having a minor dilemma, do I return the Legend, still have 20 days to return on it, or do I keep it? Is it beneficial to keep both or simply frivolous? Is the Manticore too hyped up with its trace 2D screen?

I think I started detecting about 40? years ago. I still have all the detectors I've ever bought, nine. I do not use them all, only two, the rest?...well, we have history and because of that I keep them all, old friends perhaps? I may not always make a lot of sense, However, If you just have the two, the Legend and the Manticore, and if you can, I would keep both, they are both great detectors, you would have a great backup either way and they could serve all of your detecting needs over many years, taking on all of the what, where, when and the conditions/terrain you are detecting in. Of the detectors hanging on the wall, I use only two, the Legend and the EQ 900, either one on a whim for the day I guess. Frivolous? It will most likely be a life long hobby, and you MAY never care to buy another, you've got it pretty well covered. Enjoy.

cool finds, keep swingin' and don't be afraid to dig it all. if you dig virtually everything for several hunts you can really get a good feel for what the detector is trying to tell you.

question. when you say pinpointer, do you mean the pinpoint function on your machine or do you mean a separate handheld unit that you use to find the targets after detection by your machine?

gotcha. yeah, you are likely going to want to go deeper than the pinpointer will reach, there are a lot of goodies down there

Here's a tip from an old detectorist: Gold detects the detector signal and then goes into "hide" mode and becomes undetectable to the pinpointer! It's hard to coax it out of hiding. I've never been able to.
A few times, I have done careful digging, plugging and replacing. My holes were virtually invisible - until the next day. Skunks and raccoons like easy digging for bugs and grubs! They had been out in the night. In areas where they are plentiful, I often go back and inspect a day or two after detecting and repair any animal damage.

So, mb that's why sometimes my pin-pointer stops beeping, I mean it happens a lot with my pin-pointer, I will keep that fact in mind and assume I'm onto gold...??
