I do a lot of field hunting because there isn't much modern trash and I can pretty easily find the old goodies but have you guys ever hunted around a modern house where an old one once was? If that's productive I think I might have some awesome sites in mind... just hoping to glean from yalls experience.
Thanks!

Generally what I found is pretty much the old ground bulldozed up, cleared, leveled, etc. prepped for the new home foundation with the rest of the ground changed. If it is a bigger lot like acres I would think that something may be found on bigger property.

Thanks HarleyMan,
Most of the lots where I usually dig are bigger, I am usually in fields in rural parts of Northeast Ohio. I guess I'll just have to get out there and start diggin...

I have regular access to some modern homes that are in a town founded in the late 1600's with mapped plots from the 1800's. My experience is that the modern trash is a huge pain to work through. One site in particular I know the house from the early 1900's was there until the early 2000's when it was replaced but the mess of modern and older trash is tremendous. Can slaw, trash from the road-side, and things people just buried in the 1900's is everywhere. I've managed one or two neat finds but otherwise it is a jumble of burn barrels, fire pits, and trash. I'll continue to hunt it because I expect *something* has to be there but I'm not holding out for a major win. I started there in the begining of my detecting career and quickly transitioned to beach hunting which I drive an extra hour to get to. Easier digging and constantly refreshed drops draw me to that.

Thanks Trokair, I think I might just stick to my fields... :laughing7:

I have had good luck with it. The homes may be new, but the ground was there when the original home was built. Timing is everything, and you have to get in there before they start to haul in new dirt, or back fill. Like you though, I do prefer fields over yards.
