Primary Interest:
All Treasure Hunting
We all see the videos on YouTube of people with an expensive metal detector galloping around areas digging up coins and metal refuse. While the trinkets themselves may have value to a collector, they are worth far more historically. The constant removal of items by 'relic hunters' prevents historians and archeologists alike from accurately dating sites and areas. In order to preserve our past better attempts must be made to prevent such valuable information from being removed. As a community that shares a compassion for history I ask that you offer suggestions/ideas on how we can put an end to such tragedies.

I really couldn't tell ya.

Well, first thing you kind of undercut your argument by labeling legal activities tragedies, and your description of relic hunters as someone galloping around with an expensive metal detector certainly doesn,t help either.Historians and relic hunters actually work together fairly well in my experience, but archeologists are another story, most are more interested in advancing their careers than actually preserving history. And a great deal of what they find doesn,t see the light of day where others might enjoy it.Are you a metal detector? If not I,d advise getting out and going with some real metal detectors and find out about this great hobby.Get away from the youtubers, see how real life people do it.Kind of strange to see a new member on a treasure hunting site whose first post deals with wanting to prevent metal detectors from metal detecting.Every thing I,ve spoken of applies to private property or public sites where proper permission has been obtained. No one on this forum would go onto a site that is off limits to detecting and condemns any one who would do that. That,s a really strange post you got there.

Thankee there fat,I think this is the strangest post I,ve ever seen here>

Your primary interest is listed as "all kinds of treasure hunting". Where do you hunt and what do you find that these tragedies don't happen?

You don't suppose there is an agenda, maybe, a teeny weeny one?

Historians and archeologists..like from the government, and universities?

Have you even considered that those "trinkets" would not even be known
to exist if a detectorist had not put in the research and time, and then went
out in the field and found the items?

An archeologist, unless they are teaching, pretty much relies on grants in
order to make a living. If an archeologist was smart, they'd contact the
local detecting club in the area and work out a way so both benefit.

Problem is, archeologists are generally arrogant, and to communicate with
a regular Joe who is highly skilled with a detector is simply beneath them.

As for "history"..it generally gets written along the lines of the authors
political or social leanings.

..and I got $5 says we never get a response from lailateri75.

Dizzy hit it on the head and I ain,t gonna take that bet.

Please do not insult new members even if you disagree with them.

If the relics are not protected by law, they are fair game for those of us who like to hunt them. There are areas in America that are off limits to relic hunting and I am sure there are areas in the country you live in that are off limits as well.

Metal Detectorists are Willing to Hunt Relics for Free, Some even are willing to Pay a small fee to detect certain areas,
Because We Love the History and Handling and discussing History. showing off Our finds. Etc.

You don't have to Pay us with Government Tax Money !
to think about digging a Site.

No One needs to Pay us To hire school kids to dig for free, as they walk around pretending to be better then them.
& hand over Our finds so the archie can write their papers, Claim they found them,
And sell or Bury the Finds in Basements from all other eyes of the "unworthy".

imo Detecting all Historical Sites should be open to all who wish to save the Relics before they Rot away unseen !

Just like a Tree Falling in the woods without Anyone around, is not making a sound.

A relic under the Ground isn't really there till Someone lays eyes and Hands on It :treasurechest:

If you didn't personally Bury it, and don't have a land deed, Don't tell me to Not dig because there May be a relic there :unhappysmiley:

Thank You

Some of my best fines have been from historic landmark sites where archaeologist have already went through it and they missed a lot and I mean a lot of treasure that is so beautifully displayed in my office and with that I would like to thank them.

We often congratulate finds by saying "nice rescue!". IMHO, that is entirely correct considering most would never be found and preserved by historians. Left in the soil to increasingly harsh fertilizers, pollution, and acid rain would be to allow them to be slowly destroyed. And development would take much too - perhaps that should be as condemned.

Yep Maybe Archies should get real Jobs, Stop counting on Govt support,
And buy a Detector if they really Like History
