Meteorite identification

I found this a few months ago and I have had one geologist look at it and they couldn't tell me what it was, I have since had a search around online and found that it has alot of features that a meteorite would have, it is magnetic and pretty heavy for its size.
If anyone can help with this it would be much appreciated

Pretty cool!, it must be very old!, I live in scotland so not been any active volcanos here in a while

Thanks, I'm looking forward to getting to the bottom of it, taking it to a specialist rock shop at the weekend and if I'm no further forward after that then I'm coming home to cut it

Don't cut it, there is nothing spectacular inside, it is more valuable uncut

If its a lava bomb yes it will be more valuable uncut, if its a meteorite then it will need cut to be tested

It also looks pretty similar to these aswell as a lava bomb, time will tell what it is

It is not a meteorite,

I have found a few similar to this piece. I am defiantly not a meteorite expert. I took one of my best examples to someone who knew a lot more and he said it was a lava bomb. He also mentioned that meteorites often have a flat side from being molten on the way down. Once they hit that side flattens as it cools.

Great response and I'll be sure to send her some pictures of this, I'm just a bit puzzled as scotlands last eruption was around 55 million years ago and I found a volcanic map of Scotland and this was found in a non volcanic area, also I found this rock on the surface of the ground there was no digging required

Thats why your specimen is so valuable.
analysis can determine which eruption it came from and possible deduce how powerful that eruption was, as long as that bomb remains intact

It shows no signs of being transported by glaciation, it is very possible that it landed right where you found it

I'm really interested to find out what this is, I'm hoping there's someone at this event at the weekend that can point me in the right local direction to get it analysed

This is a great website and I'm glad I found it, I'm going to post a separate thread on this fossil I found a while back, I'm taking this at the weekend to be seen along with the other rock
