Methane Gas Danger?

I was watching the History Channel a few weeks ago and they were having their dooms day series going daylight to dark it seemed. One of the dooms day scenarios was that all the methane gas under our lakes, rivers and seas would erupt to the surface and iginite it would destroy the earth. If there is that much methane down there, looks to me like someone would be working on how to harvest it as an energy source. Apparently there is enough there to meet the earth's energy needs for a million years! They showed a few lakes where it routinely bubbles up to the surface and also sand geysers caused by escaping methane after an earth quake. They also theorized that methane gas was why some ships disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle. Huge amounts of methane gas escapes to the surface under a boat causing it to lose bouyancy and blub blub down it goes. Just wondering? Monty

Not near as dangerous as the Nimrod's that live on this planet. Of course that does not include my friend Monty. We have been aware of Methane gas for 30 years. It would have to have some unknown trigger to bring it all to the surface. An earth quake that big would kill us any way. Then what would it take to set off the proper mixture of methane gas?

2 % is detetable with a standard flame safety lamp in a normal atmosphere . 5 to 15 % concentration in a normal atmosphere is flamable/explosionable/flamable with 10 % being the most critical/explosionable concentration in a normal atmosphere.
Any spark or open flame can ignite it with these concentrations.
A foolish veterinarian burned down a major dairy barn in Wisconsin a few years ago when he 'Flicked his Bic' to prove to the workers that cow farts were flamable .

Interesting topic.
Today, I drove past a site that was once a landfill, with Methane vents, which remain on the landscape. Not a good place to camp.

In New Zealand , we are dedicated to saving the rest of the World, From Itself and Other Wild Organisms.
As an example of our preparedness, we make sure all our 40 million sheep have their Gas Masks at the ready.
