Mid 19th Century Brass Item

Found this at pre civil war old home site. It was 3 inches down in the side of an old rock-walled cellar that had collapsed. I cleaned it a bit and it is solid brass. Each of the three tips/prongs on this object seems to be broken off. There are no drill holes or any place that it could have been attached to anything. I thought it might be a trigger guard for a musket when I unearthed it but i'm not so certain. I really have no idea what it is. Sorry for the weak pictures, I am getting a fine digital camera soon. Thanks for looking.

Got that fine digital camera yet? Sharp pictures would be better.

Is the end that looks like a spoon end hammered? It looks like it has had some "work" done to it.
