I had a productive day Sunday on private land (with permission of landowner) adjacent to a Civil War skirmish site. General Sherman's advance from Atlanta to Savannah consisted of a series of raiding parties and this skirmish resulted when a group of Confederate old men and young boys
attacked battle hardened U.S. veterans. The bullets shown in the photos are all CSA. The buttons, buckle, rimfire cases, and the barbell whatsit are Federal. The area that I had permission to detect was where the US troops were receiving fire and none of the bullets are drops. The pocket knife and percussion cap were detected on land the Rebel troops were advancing across while under fire. The photo of the bullets shows that by November of 1864 the Confederates were shooting anything available.........a variety of calibers.
I would welcome any information on the brass whatsit that looks like a barbell.
Thanks for looking and HH.
