✅ SOLVED Military buttons?

I know they are military, but where and when? I found them near Chickamaugua battlefield and near Fort Oglethorpe Ga. They could be civil to wwi.. I think

They are Great Seal buttons and if memory serves they were introduced in 1903.

What about the far left? It wraps around the back unlike the other 3.

It's the same general type of button. The earlier styles lacked the device over top the eagles' head and the eagles were totally different.

They are all "Great Seal" buttons of the Army and they replaced the earlier eagle type button in 1902. The button without a rim dates from 1902-1910. In 1910 a rim was added. They are still in use today. Backmarks will help date them and, if any of them have remnants of a black finish they date from 1910-1923. If there is no black on them then they could date from 1910-1917 and 1923-present day.

Post all 4 backs. Its a good chance they are different. You have at least one thats 1910 or older the others are post 1910.

The only one I can read is "Art Metal Works/ Newark NJ and it dates 1910-1930, I can only make out Philadelphia on another button. Can you read the backmarks and tell us what they are? Also tell us which backmark is on the rimless button.

I dont know why its not on my list but the top right looks like HORSTMANN * PHILADELPHIA * which is WW1 era. If its rimless, its before WW1.

I can only find three companies from Attleboro, Mass. listed for the "Great Seal" buttons. There may be more but they are not in my references.
