I was able to clean this thing well enough to read the front but I'm still not sure if anything was ever on the back.

Just to capture it in text form, it reads:

JAMES E. JOHNSON
APPONAUG R.I.
VALLEY 1-3018-M

What is that ID #? I haven't had any luck yet searching by the ID number at least, including NARA. I did find a James E. Johnson that married a Maria D. Sweet in 1874 but no idea if related to this at all.

Please help me find out who this is! Thanks!!!

I think that's an old phone number. My guess is that it was contact info on a dogs collar.

I agree with nhbenz that it's from a dog collar. I've found one very similar before.

Looks like a old tag off a dog collar. Still made like this today.
