Minelab or Whites?

I like Pintos because they're fast and handle well.

I have owned both and they both make great machines.

I have owned both and I am now a whites guy for life

I like whites because they come with a box to carry your lunch in.

We own both...Excalibur II, and 3 Whites: V3i, M6 and Coinmaster. Used to own an E-Trac, but traded it in for the V3i.

After using my minelab one arm looks like hulk hogan because they weigh 25 to 30 pounds apiece.

How much lighter are White's detectors? Compare equal machines though
Whites V3, V3i = 4.5lbs DFX300 = 4.6lbs GMT = 3.9lbs

Minelab CTX3030 = 5.2lbs E-Trac = 4.8lbs Explorer SE Pro = 4lbs Safari = 3.6lbs Xterra 705 = 2.9lbs

Not just weight, the whites machines might look heavy but they are well balanced, they actually feel lighter than what they are.

I'm going to have to hold a 3030 in my hands. I really don't care for the balance of the Etrac compared to the heavier Sov GT I have. I think it's the vertical handle and balance with the control box on rear of the straight shaft that just feels better. I'm pretty sure I will like the rear mounted configuration of the CTX. :)

My granddaughter thinks there heavy also.

Look both machines are great, you can't go wrong with either one. I have owned both and liked the minelab but I like the whites detectors better. If you bought whites, fisher, minelab detectors you will be fine. But in my opinion those are the best in the business.

Everyone says that the CTX balances better than the E-trac, and that it feels lighter as a result.
Of course it's all based on stock coils too. I imagine that a 17" coil on a CTX is going to alter the banance enough that a sling might be welcome.

Neither...Tesoro gets my vote...For the money a great machine!

Tesoros are deep machines

Well being a guy who really only metal detected for a couple years, and tried both machines, se pro and whites dfx about seven years ago, I would say if you want to just start finding goodies easily with no learning curve, meaning if you arent gonna go detecing all the time whites wins, but if you put in the hours required to get used the minelab, you will not be dissapointed, I can say when I first started with the minelab I was mad I thought what a piece of junk for a thousand bucks lol, guys with ace 250's were kicking my butt, but I kept trying and after about 50 hours I started learning the sounds, no machine makes a more beautiful sound than a minelab when finding silver, in fact it is so beautiful, you will have to dig it, lol, now when the silver is deep say more than six inches you will still hear the sound but it is faint, and you really have to learn to swing the minelab it is a slower recovery machine, not that thats bad because it discriminates ten times better than whites, and really does find deeper silver even silver leaning up agaist a nail, if you swing it the right pace it will pick up a silver dime leaning perpendicular with a nail, I have seen people doing comparisons comparing the two, and they are not swinging the minelab properly, they are two different machines, if you want to go find coins clad, silver etc fast with virtually no learning curve get whites, but the truth is if you want the coins everyone else has missed and you put in the effort to learn the minelab you will love it, and I hated it for the first 50 hours of use, I am purchasing a e trac and I hope it is better than the se as everyone has said it is, becasue i loved the se after getting used to it.

TS - I would say; You should go with Whites and please let everyone else know that "Whites" is a great machine, far superior to Minelab. In my 25 years of detecting land and water, I have used them all and had friends with all the different machines. Through years of trial and error - It is a plain fact that Whites is superior. Now go out and grab one!!!
(Then I can hit all your old spots and grab the old deep stuff with my Minelab :laughing7::occasion14:)

Well I would have to say you probably got used to your whites, because my friend has been detecting for 33 years and only bought whites, till he borrowed my se and used it, same thing happened to him he hated it till he learned it, took him longer than me to get used to it and learn the settings sound etc, he said after 100 hours of using the minelab he would never go back to whites, he would call me and tell me what a piece of junk the minelab was, old guy set in his ways, used to using whites because of the standard way the whites operates just like every other metal detector, after using the minelab and finally grasping it he sold off his whites and realized the superior machine was the minelab hands down. minelab has a better resell value than whites everyone compares everything to minelab, there is a reason for that, get minelab take your time learning it and forget about the traditional ways of all the other machines, if you are truley serious about metal detecting, I promise you, minelab will not let you down, if you want to go out and find everything fast, and you r not planning on taking the hobby serious stick with whites, it's that simple.

As you can see whatever detector the person giving you advice on uses will be the detector they tell you to buy. There is no right answer to your question. You just have to make your decision on your own.
