"MONSTER" COILS

HOW MUCH MORE DEPTH WILL THE 15-18 INCH COILS GET COMPARED TO THE STANDARD 8-9.5 INCH COILS? ANY COMMENTS WILL BE WELCOMED BECAUSE IM THINKING OF GETTING A 15 INCH FOR MY XLT.

Probably about 50 % to 100% deeper. If now you are going 18" on a quarter, you might go 24" to maybe 36", but probably just 50%. The bigger the object too, the deeper it will go on it. I am just speaking for PIs, but I am sure you will gain comparable depths on comparable changes.

Sorry, not true. Getting a "hit" on a target is the function of 2 parts. One, your detector coil must be able to send the energy down into the ground. Second, the target must be able to send that energy back up throught the ground to the recieve coil.

If you can get a hint on a quarter at 9" with your standard 9inch coil, you will probably only be able to increase that depth by 1 or 2 inches with the big coils. This is becuase that little quarter just can't send enough energy back through the ground.

Now lets hypothesize about a Fort Knox size gold bar. This is a very large item compared to the quarter. Here, your 9 inch coil might give a response at 16 inches. A monster coil can deffinately double that depth or more.

Sadly, we have been at the far end of the depth spectrum for coins for quite a few years. All the new technology has been to better identify coins in the usual depths. Until a true discriminating PI is developed, we remain at a stalemate.

Wow - 36" (three feet) on a quarter! I can't imagine any detector being able to recognize that. I planted a test garden once and at about 20" I lost the silver quarter on my Cortes, dimes disappeared at around 16". That was with the factory coil though....who knows?

Yeah, I think 10% or so added depth tops. That 10% does really help where the targets are deep like plowed fields, though. I think the real strength of a larger coil is covering more area with each sweep. Especially good on relic hunts or in large, non-trashy areas. Of course, such a coil makes the detector much more heavy. So there's a flip side to everything, LOL.

A lot of hunters are hung up on depth. Sure the larger coil can get a little more depth, but at the cost of seeing more of the ground matrix to ground balance. Some of the deep coins are lost due to to much sensitivity in some areas where the deep coin signal is not punching through to be heard. Of more importance to one or two inches deeper depth is the over lapping of the coil sweeps.

I've dug quite a few silver coins with my stock coil in areas that I couldn't get the signal with my 15" coil on. Some were deep (10") and some were surprisingly shallow (5-6"). The bigger coil had too many other signals to identify, etc. for me to be able to find the good targets that I wanted to find.

you got 20" on a quarter and 16" on a dime with your cortez!? that has to be some kind of record, especially on a freshly buried target!
