The first 2 pics shows that someone was not thinking when they later cut the stone to the entrance of Dorthea Dix Cemetery.
There were many 1888 stones there.

The next pic shows the days finds to include a neat brass gas valve.
A Camelia Silver Spoon.

I went back up, later today to look at the cemetery. Don't know if you walked through there but it's full of markers, going back to the 1800s. It looks a little like a pauper's cemetary. Thats when I noticed that the stone was engraved upside down on one side and right side up on the other. Strange....

I think the cemetery has been neglected.

The award item may have been given to someone as a booster to help them get back into society.

I`m going to do further research on Dr. Bob.

did you detect in that cemetery? or did I read your post wrong?

Bootybay
No i didn`t detect the cemetery.
This was my first visit to this site on the hill after doing research.

I hope you're kidding. Leaving your garbage around is breaking metal detecting golden rule.

Bootybay.... I didn't either. I consider that, "Off Limits".

Would it be considered my trash if i wasn`t the first one to leave it there?

OH... cool.. thanks for the info.

Incajoe i agree, and i will try to find something to save the cans i find in while i`m detecting.

leaving trash / aluminum is just not right for the environment.

Thanks thomas_miles 25 i thought it might be a reward for those who cannot quite cope.

You dig it up.......it's yours. Nothing bums me out more than to be metal detecting and to find pull tabs and junk that was obviously dug up by a previous detectorist laying around on the surface. If you were a land owner and you saw someone pulling junk out of the ground and leaving it laying around would you be inclined to invite that person back or allow others to come and metal detect on your property? The answer is no.

Can someone post the metal detecting golden rules.

Since I`m new to this i thought it would be polite to dispose of trash found on consenting property owners land and allow the state property employees to be able to recycle aluminum as they do from my recycle bin i leave on the street each week since i see them recycling their finds at the local cash for aluminum sites.

If i recall correctly my tax dollars pay them to pick-up and drive city and state vehicles to recycle their finds.

Unfortunately they don`t share their bonus incomes with the city, state or IRS.

I can understand where you are coming from and your thinking on the matter but the fact is that who knows when and if a state employee will come by and if they will even pick it up when they do see it. In the meantime everyone has to look at it, young kids could hurt themselves playing with it (we've all been cut by a mangled aluminum can, right?). The proper thing to do is to remove it when you dig it.

Here is a code of ethics I found doing a quick search:

Metal Detecting Code of Ethics

* No leaving of holes and trash you dug up behind.
* Always ask permission to hunt private land, and get it in writing if possible.
* If you are asked to leave a place, just say, "Okay, sorry." and leave.
* Avoid confrontation with the authorities at all costs.
* Don't steal your friend's spots
* Abide by all state and local laws
* Report all live ammunition and lethal objects to the police
* Use common sense and consideration for others when detecting.
* Be responsible

Inca.... The property that he's talking about is about to be totally abandoned. It's an old State Hospital that has many old, deteriorated and abandoned buildings.

Trust me... No kids are going to be playing in the area.

We're making a mountain out of a mole hill, here. We're not talking about property where people frequent and play every (or any) day.

I was there with him.

Thanks for the codes incajoe.

This is one of the cleanest state property sites i`ve ever visited including parks.
I will bring a trash bag with me the next time i go.

To bad we cant get them to clean up all the new dog poop i see each weekend >:(

I'm not trying to be jerk. I honestly had no idea what type of property this was and when he said that state workers would come by to clean up I had assumed it was a state park. Obviously an abandoned property is a different situation. Sorry if I ruffled any feathers but this is just one of those things that bugs me when I see it done in parks and public places.

Just have to go on record here:

If you dig it.....it is yours! Leave the land better than you found it. I once hunted with an SOB that didn't fill holes....that really p'd me off! I am not pointing fingers here, but have a conscience at all times.!

Just curious... Did you tell your (SOB) friend to fill his holes?
