The dirt [mud] fishing really paid off today.
The old homestead site gave up 2 Coppas and an Indian Head.
40 degrees with rain and snow moving in so I had to get out before things froze up again.
Got 3 hours in before the rains hit. The large cent and half penny were only 6 feet apart and I found then on two cosecutive digs. How's that for the luck of the Irish?
The half penny says Field Marshall Wellington on one side and Half Penny Token on the other.
I can not find a date.
Thanks for looking and best luck to all, Merf

Merf I think all of those sweet large cents stop at Springfield.Im still waiting to find one.Great finds and good luck on your next hunt.

Another sweet hunt and finds. They really turned out pretty good after a little tumble. ;D I've never tried tumbling my old stuff - just clad.

Wonderful find and love your pictures. Why did you stop to hunt there? Looks like just a big open field.

Does cleaning your coins reduce their value?

Thanks SKD-----I found an old map that showed a house there in 1870. Just farmfield now.
I know that cleaning silver coins does reduce thier value.
I am not sure about copper coins. Looking at E-Bay coins, I have not seen any green, as dug, coins up for auction. I think cleaning old copper coins would actually increase thier value if one was to sell them.
Not sure though, as I have never sold one.

Thanks SilverBob, Goldencoin, T-Bucket, and Mirage.
I have got to pound that spot some more. Got to be a half dime there somewhere.

Great finds Merf...hopefully the weather holds out for you a little longer so you can hit that site a few more times. Best of luck on your future digs.

As far as the cleaning questions goes...I feel if you don't plan on selling your coins then clean them anyway that will make them display the best. If it is a rare key date I would never clean it myself. If I can't tell what the coin is after cleaning it through a 'gentle' method it most likely has no collector value so I will get more aggresive and will use a rock tumbler in that case.

Thanks NJ-----You are right on about the key dates. If I found a key date copper I would have it proffessionaly cleaned and graded.

Wow, Merf, you have been hitting some nice sites lately. I am proud of you, man. :)

Keep showing EDDE how it is done! ;) :D

Thanks Kirk, I have had a streak of good luck with the Coppas.
I need to get ED out there hunting with me one of these days.
