Well the rains have finally slacked off and I can poke around the creek...the largest shard I found pretty far downstream of where I usually find stuff and all the others I found in the usual spot...gotta say I've had no luck for the last couple of weeks with the exception of an un-chipped porcelain canning jar lid...but now the creek has been getting a good washing from the storms and giving up a few shards.

My son and I have been making plans and building a box to sift with so hoping when we dig a little deeper we will find the points...but for now it's all good with the shards!

Yeah those are some nice pieces. I enjoy finding the shards. I believe you are the shard queen.

You might have a whole trash pit under there.
Sounds like the sifter is the way to go for sure.
The amount below the surface is likely much larger...you might want to probe around a bit and feel for a different material layer.

Good for you guys. Somewhere on here is a post just full of all kinds of sifters that members made. Some simple others very high quality. I will try to find it and send you a head up.

Sometimes creeks change course and will cut a site in half. Pottery travels easily with high water. Look to the banks and any level areas that would make a good camp.Let us know how you do.

Wouldn't surprise me if that's what's happening here...this creek is a tributary off a main creek...travels down a mountain and levels out and circles around my neighbor's and my property and then reconnects with the main creek. The main creek was a placer gold mine in the first gold rush in this county and now barely a trickle of water goes down it whereas my section of the creek is quite abit wider and the water is rushing thru it most the time unless it's dry weather then it's low but always flowing fast. I used to could get to where it connects under a bridge real easy but the other neighbor has put some cattle on the pasture between my land and that section and it's not as easy to get to. The other trail has rattlesnakes and copperheads and I'm not real fond of trekking it. But on the other hand am real curious to see if there is anything there...this is all bottom land and floodzone flat so I'm not surprised to be finding what I have found. Only it's been several thousand years now and lots of erosion and dirt buildup...at least 4' to 5' of it. Hoping I made sense...getting late and kinda sleepy lol

Maybe take some pics of the creek for us to see NCPeaches.
@ Tnm thats a neat bucket you made. I have plenty of buckets I believe I will try to make on of those. Great idea

Great finds. The Berry site in Burke County located on Upper Creek (tributary of the Catawba River) was excavated extensively and some great potsherds were found there. Perhaps a local archaeologist could help identify?
