1st pic shows the hill I found this 1/2 cent on this morning and the lack of snow on the ground here in Michigan in mid Jan. which is crazy for this time of year because we're usually riding snowmobiles rgt about now (but not to mention) being able to actually "dig" in the soil at this time of year too!

This was a quick 20 min hunt at an old park near my house a little before 9:00 am this morning while waiting for my girlfriend who was shopping in the store across the street. It was cold out and the ground is getting frost but is still digable - hoping for it continue that way as I want to go back and do more of the hill this weekend when I get time.

It's in sad shape even after I cleaned it with soap & water and looks to have been in the ground for a long time. The date is 182? - can't quite make it out but it's still a 1/2 cent ;D

HH all,

Lonewolfe

Great dig! Back when that coin was made it probably would of paid for your breakfast.
I hope the January thaw holds out for you.Not quite so lucky here in northern Wisconsin.

Excellent find Lonewolf! Does most of your copper come out of the ground green or brown? Nice, never found a half cent yet. WTG HH Coinman66

It depends on where I find them -

Michigan has several different types of soil that vary from area to area, east side to west side of the state and can even differ in one town to the next or even within the same town, etc.

Some is a yellow or white sandy loam type (water drains fast in this type), some is black dirt, some is clay type, some is a mix of clay/black dirt, some has red sand mixed in with black dirt (iron rich) yet some is a mix of many with some even having small gravel/stone in it. It just depends on where you are/hunt.

I found this in a mix of sandy loam/black dirt with the sand being approx. 75/80% of the mix (common in west Michigan) and which is why the coin is still legible to some degree because water drains fast in that type helping to preserve artifacts but other soil types here in MI would've ate the coin alive making it completely unrecognizable (heavy black dirt or clay type soils mainly and especially with any type of mineral content mixed in).
