I found this 1996-D cent in a roll, it looks like a steel penny and it is slightly larger then a normal penny!

was hoping someone could tell me what kind of error this is, I can take more pics if you want, so just ask.

That is pretty interesting. Keep us posted on what you find out. I'd take it to a dealer and see what their opinion is. Thanks for sharing.

You are all wrong ::)

The inside of pennies has been made of zinc since 1982, of course, and either someone used acid to take off the copper or it was some type of minting error. However, there is no way to tell which one it is. I suggest saving another 99 cents and getting something off the dollar menu ;)

i spotted the difference in the ear and then the hairline..maybee someones attempt at making pennies????

Easy...plating issues. The zinc penny is made by a 4 slide progressive stamping die, some of the components of the tooling have possibly worn down which increases the geometric size of the face details. Next?

One other small detail, there are probably many dies producing the same penny, they are all not exactly the same from a geometry standpoint.

My thoughts are that it could be an off metal error struck on a foreign planchet. That could explain the additional details because the details took to the off metal better than a normal zinc planchet?? Weigh it and also see if a magnet will stick to it. You could also email those pictures to an error coin dealer like Fred Weinberg just to get an expert opinion. If it is a real error it would probably worth sending it in to get it graded and certified.

Nothing about your Lincoln cent looks authentic. I wonder if it is some type of magic or trick coin? Look carefully at the figure of Lincoln and you'll see the hairline is wrong, the beard is wrong, the ear is wrong, the cheek is wrong, etc.. It's a fake.

The two pennies look IDENTICAL to me except one maybe a bit larger. I must be blind or dont have the same imagination.

Wait a minute! It looks Christlike (the one on the left) ;)

Put it on e-Bay. Someone will buy it! ;) :D

Texan thanks for posting that link. hers look exactly like mine, she even describes things that i left out...like the penny being somewhat bowed. Mine has that defect alao...im pretty positive its a mint error...or someone is having fun making lots of steel-like pennies! ::)

I apologize for the joke about eBay. I couldnt resist. Nice pics BTW... very clear.

If yours are bowed, I would have to conclude that it was heated. The dissimilar metals cause it to easily bow. I have had pennies bow sitting on my dash of my car in the hot sun with the windows up. I cant imagine a mint error being bowed. Just my opinion.
