I head back out today with Mom and Ben back to the colonial woods. We must have sucked all the nectar out of the woods because it was a tough day. I managed to find some of the strangest things. One find rang up as silver and looks like a small coin/button/pin of a spanish conquistador looking dude. The other find is a strange cufflink? that was a painnnn to clean. Looks like gold plate and has a horseshoe with an asterik star in the center. The OTHER find is a tiny charm type thing with 3 attachment holes and a dove/eagle in the center with words above that I cant make out. Other finds include 2 buttons and some lead and a silver rosy.Any thoughts? I really like the ancient looking spanish dude. Probably not too old but interesting.

Good finds. I hope that's an old coin. Looks like silver. maybe some fire damage? Can you see anything on the back? Looks like some kind of detail.

Hey Greylock it is definitely silver. The back seems plane and the edges seamed rolled or damaged. WEIRD

The pendent looks more like an owl......
Nice finds...!

That Spanish Conquistador Thing Is Odd. Im Also Thinking Some Type Of Coin. Hopefully Its A Rare One! Looks Like You Have A Lot Of Research Ahead Of You Jim!

Nice silver very curious looking! Pendant does look like an owl. Hopefully the cuff link is gold and not gf.
Congrats! HH!

I've been looking for a match to that coin thing for a while with not much luck. Pretty close to some Panama coinage but can't be certain. Hopefully it will get an ID.

Nectar...haha. Cool finds!

I see no letters, words or numbers on that 'coin'--so doubt it is one.
Maybe a seal or cap to something.
Don.....

This is a mercury dime that's had some fire damage. Sometimes there's no letters, words, or numbers for an ID. Not saying is is or isn't but would be cool if it was an old coin.

Greylock,
You're right, I'll stay open to your suggestion that the object is a damaged merc. dime.
I can see the 'fasces' and the olive branch in the proper position-even without letters, words or numbers.
Thanks,
Don..

Very damaged, like Mac states, its not a coin. At first I thought button top, until you said silver, because that would be very unusual. No idea really, other than not coin.

Looking at it again, the top images in both sets of pics looks like two different objects. Perhaps the lighting or the angle, but what I see in the bottom pic (obverse) doesn't look at all like the image in the top set (obverse) side.
Don...

(per gwdigger) I typed in helmeted bust ancient coin and clicked google images. Some interesting similarities and some with no writing at all.

And I (unconsciously) made the far out assumption that a coin found in New Jersey was not an ancient coin.
Don....

lol. Got it but I found 2 ancient coins in the same field in Maryland. Surely from an old collection but my point is they are occasionally found over here. I've read about a number of them being found in the states.

That Merc dime that had fire damaged leads me to believe it is possibly a coin. I don't think it is ancient, but maybe some kind of foreign very similar to a panamanian balboa. Only thing that throws me off is the beard and a little diff helmet style. If i didnt see the merc dime with a smooth flat obverse and rolled edges I would have thought a decoration to a button....

would that be jerseyben?

would that be jerseyben?

Yes, I didn't post anything because I got skunked. Lol.

Congrats on a fun hunt, Jim! I'm glad the cufflink cleaned up well and the silver coin thingy is very mysterious indeed.

Cant wait for the next hunt!!!
