I dug this at a home site where I have found 1700s relics such as flat buttons without back marks. It's solid brass and based on the rust it was attached to something with an iron screw. My first guess was trigger guard but now I'm not so sure.

Kinda looks like a broken screen door handle.

My first thought was "coat hook".

I have to disagree about it being a coat-hook, because if that's what it is, why is the side which fits against the wall curved, instead of flat?

OK. Maybe a broken tea kettle handle. But not a trigger guard. The metal is too thick and the angle is too shallow for a trigger guard piece.

DCMatt, that's an amazing ID. :) Even if I knew what that broken little brass object is, I doubt I could come up with a photo showing it intact AND in-place on the larger object. Well done.
