I have been researching and reading a lot more lately, as the "Treasure Coast" of FL, as well, much of the East coast, has been thoroughly sanded in. My three favorite resources are books by Gary Drayton, Clive James Clynick as well as "The Detecting Lifestyle Podcast". Check out the first two if you want to read some great stuff. They have completely different personalities, yet there is no argument that their finds are remarkable.....to make it simple.Gary and Clive have both answered many of my emails personally and are both very friendly & informative, as well as just plain old great guys. I have learned soooooooo much from both of their books and today it finally paid off !!!!!!!
In my research I keep seeing the same theme "Watch Your Beaches". In other words, look at it daily....what's different? Anything new? Are there HUGE new rocks visible that were covered with sand yesterday. I decided to work around the base and the gaps in the now exposed rock formations with my pro-pointer. within seconds of working the base of this 4x4 foot slab of stone, I nailed a men's silver wedding band. With our high tide slowly approaching 3 feet (sarcasm) I decided to work newly visible rock formations as well as yesterday's towel line including the dune's bases and all the entrance areas. I started at 6AM ..... loving the MXT PRO Backlit VDI too !!!!!!. Until 11:30 I had all clad .... lots of greenies ( the renourishment sand on the towel line is allegedly from a lake / pond in Orlando ). Remember, even replenishment sand comes from somewhere !
For my last half hour I said to myself "I'll just work where the base of the dune where the dune meets the dry sand ....... Furthermore I will discriminate the hell out of the base and only be digging coins period. INCREDIBLY I found a Walking Liberty Half !!!!! It read a LOUD 93 on my Whites MXT VDI and would not fluctuate. I pinpointed it at 11" and actually had to use my Garrett pinpointer to locate it ( I love that thing ) I pulled it out and couldn't believe it....A Walking Liberty. So worn out I can not even red the date !!!!! ( even after a thorough cleaning) but still a Walking Liberty !!!!!! I know that in the world of MD'ing this is not a huge find, but for me it is !!!! I am starting to understand the beach, how it works and where it holds the goodies. How tides work, where to look, where to discriminate and when not to. What to grid and what to quickly scan.....It's starting to all make sense.......I LOVE THIS DAMN HOBBY !!!!!!!!!!!
