What a awsum day detecting.

Hunted some old Acadian land.....the 1676 coin was only 1 inch deep !!!!! CAN ANYONE ID IT FOR ME.?

The silver ring was at 4 inches.....but don,t think its all that old..dunno.

The copper coin I can,t identify..perhaps someone can ???.....that was a few feet from a foundation.

The musket balls were close to the surface also.

I found out why things were so close to the surface....at the end of the day I was talking with the owner..thay had the top 10-12 inches of soil stripped away from the fields close to the house when they built it !!!!

My 1st 1600s coin and my 1st silver coin in 2 months.

The size is a little smaller than a modern nickel.

But as Rick said---its very thin....amazing that it never got bent and still has its detail.

And ty for all the awsum info guys !!!!!!!

Is the ring a old ring or a modern ring lost my someone---seems odd that it was 5 inches deep and the sol was 1 inch. ??

On my way back to the same spot now......will post in about 6 hrs my finds .

I LOVE THE HISTORY BEHIND THESE FINDS..TY ALL !!!

Thanks. So is there 24 shillings in a pound and how many pennies in a shilling? So a 4 Sol coin might be approximately the same size or a bit smaller than a William III six pence? The 1625 link is interesting, but I guess we need to calculate what the "theoretical" exchange rate of the pound to dollar would have been in those days. We can base the dollar on the weight in silver of an 8 real I guess. In other words how many English pennies does 6 cents equate to?

This entry made me laugh :laughing7: (yes I know it is/was a sausage or something like that):

One hundred faggots with carriage......3s

Would be less than a William sixpence because they are only .800 silver, and I am pretty sure the 4 sols would be lighter in weight.

Your last line makes a good jeopardy question.... Even this won't keep Crusader away from detecting. Answer: What is One hundred faggots with carriage.

Absolutely fabulous finds. Coincidentally, I found a Dolphin ring very similar to yours about a month ago. .

Based on the 1625 link and the fact that this coin contains less silver than a Wm III 6d, I'd say it would have paid for a typical meal at a country inn, so depending on perspective it was worth to someone then what somewhere between $5 and $20 dollars is worth to us is my best estimate (I'm leaning towards the bottom end of that). The estimator says it's worth about $3 which may be more accurate than I originally thought. Supply and demand for labor and items have changed over the years so it's not such an easy conversion.

They probably weren't heartbroken at losing this coin, though it may have been a temporary inconvenience depending on the person's station in life.

Amazing Silver man!!!

I told you, more would come out of there... and what a beautiful old french silver.... congrats...deserving a banner in my books...

That's an awesome coin and you beat me by one year. I found a 1677 4 sols earlier this year. You are hunting in all the right places that's for sure. Good luck there.

Age & condition - very nice find!

Nice finds, I would love to dig a coin as old, not to mention one being that old and silver!!!!

Here's some info on what a French sol was and what a sol is equivalent too in modern money.

French sol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

If the linked info is correct, a 2005 Euro is now valued at $1.35, so a 4 sols would of been worth in today's money around $6.40

Here's some info about the French denier of which there were twelve to sol, a French denier is equivalent of a British penny, so a French 4 Sols was about .48 cent British in 1676.

TY for the nice info...

keep digging and you will find your old silver....I went 2 months with not finding a silver coin...lotsa old coppers back to the early 1700s ...found lotsa silvers before that..but oldest was 1899.

My F75 screams over silver......very exciting to see the high numbers when they lock in...but this time it didn,t......after it was outta the ground it rang in high but for some reason it rang in at the pull tab range when in the ground.
