Here are the updated pics of the "Model 1860". It took me a couple of days to clean it but I think it came out pretty good. After I cleaned it I picked it up and held it. WOW ;D what a feeling. It is incredible to think that the last person to hold this sword was 140 years ago and they were fighting in the Civil War. It is an awesome feeling being able to hold a peice of history like this...

The first two shots are the before, the next two are actual color of the sword cleaned, the whole shot looks all gold but it is just the lighting. (one day I will get good at photography)

Thanks everyone for all the great posts ;D ! It is a good feeling being able to share your pics with people who enjoy this stuff as much as I do. I am going to do my best to clean the sword and preserve it in its present condition. I will post those pics when I am finished (if it turns out O.K.), I don't want to damage it in any way, the blade very fragile and thin at the handle...

Lamont!!!!! Have you been huntin with the Cooper Bros?........Thats worthy of them, good for you.Hang up the MD! are you crazy! Your just getting started for the summer. I could only wish to have the place to hunt that you have. Out here in old Culpeper all of the people must have been beaten with metal detectors, no one will give permission but I'm going to keep trying. One of these old B#s@*rds will give up permission sooner or later.

ALOT OF TIME! At first I used running water and a soft bristle tooth brush. Just brushing it softly, under the water. After that I had heard somewhere, probably on this site, about using Olive Oil. So, I let it soak in the oil most of the day while using the tooth brush every half hour or so to brush it. After taking it out of the oil I used the brush and running water again, then I dried it off and put a coat of oil on the blade to keep it from deteriorating even more. All in all it was about a two day process, I think if I spent another two days on it I could get it a little better but my hands are too cramped up and I like the way it looks... Any cleaner and no one will believe that it came from the ground.

By the way congrats on the "Three buckle day", that is very impressive. Besides bullets and a couple of smaller items this is my first :o "big" CW find.

AWESOME! I wouldn't be able to sleep for a week. I can't believe this hasn't made the BANNER yet. You should be very proud of that sword, I would be.

damn awesome find cleaned up fantastic

I can't believe this is'nt on the Banner yet!!!!!!!

Banner. It should be on the banner. If it doesn't get on the banner soon, I would have that sucker restored and then post those picks. That would guarantee it appearing on the banner...

Congrats! That is amazing!!

Thats one of the nicest things I've seen come out of the ground (or on top of the ground) in quite a while!!!

Good job, great pictures.

How much longer is it going to take for it to appear on the banner?!?!?!?

:o :o
I Can't believe my EYES!
the amazing detail on the handle of the sword, the cleaning job you did was amazing. The detail and relief in the flags on either side of the eagle is incredible!

Also, the detail in the handle as it meets the very end of the handle, even the bands that hold in the leather part of the grip!

It must certainly be a rush to hold a bona-fide sword that was once in the hands that was fighting for what they believed in.....

If this does not make the banner, I don't know what will.......your sympathetic restoration of the detail work shows you took your time to do it right.

Great work Lamont, let's see some more detail pics of the other side!

Thanks! This is a FANTASTIC find for you as well. You know, sometimes they drove them into the ground to mark graves.

If this is a plowed field, it might explain the bends...but it is something to consider!

Todd, Haven't had much time to get on lately but did tonight and just had to let you know the sword is incredible... The cooper brother's will have to get back out there in the swing of thing's. Once again way to go and definitely BANNER MATERIAL....

FROM ONE T. TO ANOTHER, AWESOME..........

that is an awsome find

That is true..you may wanna contact someone and they can research it more and maybe check out the area you found the sword. It would be nice that if it was marking a grave that someone could either mark it properly and do what needs to be done to get it marked and the officer identified. There were waaaaaaay too many soldiers lost on both sides that were never found and their families never got the closure of knowing where or how they died and where their final resting place may be. It may have just been a lost or dropped sword, but if it was in fact marking a grave, that grave is now lost forever as well as the soliders identity and story...You could possible change that, and that would be awesome!!
Fantastic sword regardless and I agree...BANNER!!!
