All 4 of these reales were found on the same day,and if it was'nt for the farmer who owns the land I would have never found them,I was getting permission from him to hunt another area on his property that at one time had an old merchantile store on it.When he told me about another place that had alot of old stone and glass laying around on top of the ground, when I found the spot I knew right away that it was much older that the 1872 plate that I use to hunt with, in just a short time I had started to find several flat buttons and alot of pottery, broken bottles with pontil scars and pieces of redware. In the next couple of hours I had found the 4 reales ,the first one was the 1788 half reale and then the others.
The only other coins that I found on this site was a coronet large cent with no date and a U.S. half penny that was cut in half. I have hunted this place numerous times since and not found any more coins, but maybe someday I'll find another reale! THEY WERE FOUND IN ILLINOIS

When you get into that age of finds there's plenty of possible keepers other than Spanish silver. I wouldn't give up on that spot!

I don't think we've ever had a site here give up 4. Three is the most I can think of, and oddly the place would be far down the list of our best sites.

One of my best Rev areas that was loaded with military buttons and coppers, including 3 GREAT sites, not a single old silver coin was dug. Yet we've found old silver including Spanish at places that couldn't hold a candle to even one site in that good location. When I get into older targets at a new site I tend to have a pretty good feeling if we'll see some military, but when it comes to silver, very random. Of course the numbers have to do with that too, way more mil. buttons than early silver coins.
