My daughter's find

My kid found an obviously shaped piece of gray chert. It is broken, so I cannot tell if it had a point or not.

We live in Apache, OK. I know that we live in the Comancheria, but Comanches used metal arrowheads.

My thing is MDing. She just likes interesting rocks, and the fact that she found this one amazed me.

My theory is that it may be some sort of scraper point, since the shaped side resembles a thin chisel point.

I can't see it that well, but it may have been a nice arrowhead that was broken, or like you sai, a scraper!

Talk it up to her. Let her know how cool it is!

Looks like a broken base off of a point... Also looks like it could be heat treated, cause I think I see some small pops in the chert...

She is ten. She has my curiosity. I found a fractured pottery marble last year after a heavy rain that was identified as a Bennington.

I thought this may have been a broken projectile point too until I noticed that the flat edge was knapped down flat and sharp.

I thought heat treated rock turned red?

I think it is too small. It is approximately the size of a nickel.

I wondered about that too, lordpinney....but unless it was an unfired one, wouldn't it have been rather chipped and blunted, rather than sharp?

I guess I need to find some examples.

Yeah, it is too finely knapped to be a gunflint. I guess I need to start looking at the stuff common to the tribes here, but this being Oklahoma, that is going to be a daunting task.

Gun flint was my initial thought. That too would be a great find. Of course it is difficult to judge definitively from a photo. Atta Girl for sure. You said you MD'D--did you find any 1800's stuff in the area?

I am not sure where she found it. I think on the playground at school. They have gravel there, so I rarely go there to MD. I have found a silver ring there though.

I know the town dates back to 1890-1900 which puts it way out of range for a flintlock, although some of the tribes held onto them long after everyone else upgraded.

Odds are that it predates in of the historic tribes that were in your area... Aside from a couple of guys that hunt really late sites (1200's through 1700's), most of what we find is better than a thousand years old and can go back 14,000 years old or so.

I think that it may have been found in a load of gravel at my kid's school, which means it could be from anywhere.

My knowledge is limited to Clovis/Not Clovis.
