Hello Friends.

I sprinted out the door after work today so I could squeeze in a determined two-hour hunt at the "Spoon Graveyard," which for those of you who don't know, is this nice old cellar hole area I've been working that's been producing lots of old coins, relics, and as you may have guessed, TONS of old spoons. Today I found half of a silver-teaspoon, bringing this one site's spoon total up to 8.5 in just a few hunts.

But enough about spoons; today's highlight was my first Flying Eagle Cent, an 1858. It was pretty toasty, I must admit, and the nickel content in it made it turn thick red like those old V Nickels and Buffalos you see. So I tried the vinegar and salt method to try and salvage some detail, but it's still pretty rough. You can't make out the date in the pics but in the flesh it's visible to the eye. Iffy condition or not, I was still pretty thrilled to find it.

I also nabbed:

  • Two Indian Heads (seven total for this site) -- an 1865 (my second-oldest after my 1863) and an 1884 in pretty nice shape
  • 1918 Wheatie
  • Two knives -- an antique wood-handled pocketknife (second from this site) and just the handle of a larger table/carving knife, as well as another pocketknife fragment
  • Silver-plated spoon half as mentioned above
  • Horseshoe
  • Miscellaneous green whatsits and the ever-present shotgun shells

As long as this spot keeps producing like this, I'll keep digging, and will keep you posted. Hope you enjoyed the pics.

Cheers and HH,
Brendan

WoW! That one is on my list to find! But I don't think I'll be gifted with another miracle! :D That is ONE AWESOME site you have! Fantastic finds and good hunting on your return! ;)

Nana :)

Thanks, Nana. It's really nice when the metal detecting planets align like this. I'm barely two years into the hobby (at least on a serious level, not counting the crummy Radio Shack I had eight years ago), so for me things have kicked into a whole new level this year with this site. I've been inspired to post because it's been a very exciting time for me.

For you and anyone else who is curious to see what I've found there, if you haven't seen the older posts already, the links are here:

I'm really surprised to have dug a total like this in just five hunts. I'm not complaining! ;)

Enjoy and HH,
B

Hehe I wasn't going to say anything, Joe. Like I said, I blame the shovel! ;) And yes, I still covet that new Lesche of yours. Have you had a chance to break it in?

Yeah, I got a chance to play with it at your relic place (that day we couldn't hook up at the park). Very nice sturdy tool that digs very deep, neat plugs. I'm going to go through my Google Earth maps tonight to prep for tomorrow. I have 2 places I want to hit. I happened to drive by one of them last week. Looks like an old park from the condition / type of playground equipment. The other is all woods with some nice history.

Congrats!! Those F.Eagles are a tough one to find...Not the best shot, but here's an 1858 I dug in NH...my 3rd in 20yrs. :)

Get a wire-wheel and and that shoe will come nice and clean...iron and brass clean up good on it.

WTG on some great finds!

That flying eagle would make my day for sure!

Wish I could find a place like that. Only been at this MD for about 6 Mo. here on the Island and glad that some stuff is still around. Keeps my hopes up.

Thanks Hank. That's a nice Eagle you've got there yourself. And thanks for the iron cleaning suggestion. I actually find all kinds of cool iron relics...it would be nice to be able to pretty them up.

Take care!

Mike, just keep at it and it will happen. I've only been doing this for two years, and I was far from hot in the beginning. The key is tons of research and practice! The spots are there, but if you can't find them, or don't know how to use your detector once you get there, you're not going to have much luck. Get some old maps for your town and start there. Keep me posted!

Cheers and HH,
Brendan

Way to go and Welcome to the Fleagle Club!! They're a beautiful design.

Nice Indians, too.

Since clubfolks are posting their F.E.'s, here's mine--found around May of '07 at an 1868 farmhouse site. So far, it's my oldest coin and one of my faves.
It's due to go back into the olive oil for another few months. Actual color is dark brown 'penny-ish', lighting problem.
