My first gold

I found my first gold, a 10KT necklace, its broken and twisted but man was I excited when I saw what it was.

Wow!, where did it read on your meter? Nickle or zinc penny maybe?

It was a scratchy broken signal that jumped from just below Nickel to just above nickel on my analog meter. I make myself start out hunting with the discrimination just below foil until I dig 20 junk targets, then I move the discrimination to just below tabs and leave it there until it gets unbearable...then I set it to between 7 (tabs) & 8 (next to the highest discrimination setting). This time I had it set just below foil but higher than the default. The end of my hunts are usually just clad and the occasional silver due to the high discrimination. I love that old detector....can't understand why they stopped making them!

I still have the 6000 D and it is still a great machine, found my first gold's and several silvers with it however, never as much gold as you have there. a 41.67% pure gold you are looking at quite a nice sum of money just for gold content! Every now and then someone gets a great surprise, it is your turn!.................63bkpkr

Yes, it's the only detector ive ever used and I think its an incredible machine to be as old as it is. I started detecting 28 March 2013 .... after about 8 weeks of field use, a few hours every day, i've learned allot and found some great finds. I'm still trying to figure out what gold sounds like. Awesome detector!

I think it's time I invest in a digital scale for my silver and gold finds so I'll have a better idea of what I have. Anyone have any suggestions on where to pick one up / pricing? You really think that necklace would be worth much? It feels pretty light.

If its 41.67% pure what would be a good scrap price per gram? I don't know the math behind that one

Hi Arthur, your scale purchase will tell you the reality of the find, how much it weighs times 10/24 = pure gold amount (10 karat divided by 24 karat) times the current spot price for pure gold = about what someone will pay you for the necklace.

Gold is sold/purchsed by the Troy ounce, 12 troy ounces to the pound = 373.299 grams per pound of gold BUT check the gram conversion factor to confirm it is correct. The conversions can be found on the web.

Next: I am assuming the 6000 diPro is a similar machine to the 6000 D and if that assumption is correct then you have some interpolation you could do that will help you a great deal with identifying targets before you dig them. I've some instructions for the 6000 D that allow a person to confirm where on each machine it responds to what type of metal and how to best use this information to very accurately determine what metal is beneath the coil. I've used it on my unit and and always use the method described and have checked and rechecked my targets and the percentage of correct information is very very high. If you can research to check if the machines are electronically/controls/general function are the same then I will make a copy of the papers and send them to you.

As of this morning 10k per gram would be $17.42 . Gold took a slight drop yesterday to $1,299.00 per ounce . The lowest it's been in a while .

BIG CONGRATS ON PRETTY GOLD NECKLACE! I enlarged pic for closeup of necklace AND the wonderful old key that I WANT! I dug the top half of a similar key in park last year and zealously pounded that area for long time seeking the lower half, but no luck, wah. Gimme your key!!!! lol Andi

Thanks for your reply. After a short hiatus due to back problems I returned to detecting. I bought a used MXT (it loves quarters) and a new Whites M6 as a backup detector...plus I just wanted to give it a try, love the tone id on it. you ha

You had some great tips on the 6000, any you might would share on the MXT or M6 or any good resources? I've discovered, that in my area, if a signal jumps between quarter and dime on the MXT its usually a rusty bottle cap. I'm sure someone has put together a PDF somewhere on the net so if have a link please share.

On a side note...I still love the old 6000...I found allot of really great stuff with it...old or not
