In May 2014 the Witchita Falls Texas GPAA had a metal detecting event at the ghost town of Thrift, Texas. One hundred dollars worth of silver coins were buried over this 40 acre area. The event started at 09:00 a. m. in
our beautiful Texas sunshine (hot). By noon, only three coins had been discovered, two buffalo nickels and a 1964 dime. I was fortunate enough to have found the 1964 dime with my bounty hunter. I do not know what
the final score for the event was as I had to leave right after lunch for the three hour drive back to my home. I do know that in spite of the heat, a good time was enjoyed by all who attended. Thrift, Texas now sits on
private land. It was once a thriving tent oil boom town in the 1890's. A fire destroyed the town and it was never rebuilt. There were lots of artifacts to be found besides the coins. I also found a solid brass 2 inch pipe
spacer to go along with my dime. At 72 with a pacemaker, I am a little slow in the field but I am still getting out and swinging my bounty hunter when I can.

There's advantages to our being 72 and slower than the general crowd of energizer-bunny detecting folk: my best find so far was a dusty surface find of a beautiful 1923 silver Peace dollar which I spied as I meditatively wandered around a field without my detector while waiting for my son. If I'd been chugging along rapidly -- no silver dollar! There's an excellent chance that moving slowly is the reason you dug one of only 3 silver coins during your group hunt. The younger dudes & dudettes possibly were speeding over some of the goodies so missed them totally. HAVE FUN! Let's compare what we both dig up between now and our 80th birthdays, even if it's mostly just more aches and pains.
Have Fun! Andi
