The mythological Goddess Liberty looks pretty worn out and she has a dirty face on this 1917 Merc; but I think she's just beautiful. I found her today hiding on the corner of a building in an old park on Owasco Lake that has been hit pretty hard by detectors over the years. I've been hunting here off and on lately and was pretty sure I'd find a silver coin here sooner or later. Today was the day!! ;D

While we are speaking of misnomers........

It is a shame that we know the quarters as Standing Liberty and the halves as Walking liberty, when in fact both ladies are Miss Columbia. The difference? Except for the spiked hat, I am not sure but there is. I have a WWI recruiting poster with Miss Columbia (it's ok, I thought she was Liberty until I was educated otherwise) as well as a poen "O Columbia". She is wrapped in a flag and has a small cloth hat, just like the quarter and half. Something to think about. At the same time, consider the 3 groove bullet instead of the 3 ring bullet.

I agree with the concept of learning something new every day. But Wiki may not be the best source for everything. Where's the Brittanica when you need it??

Ok, that is enough of rattling very old concepts today.
