Hello all,

I'm new to the hobby and new to the site.

Bought a Bounty Hunter Pioneer 505 about a month ago to try my hand at this. Decided to practice in my own yard for awhile until I got the hang of digging without doing to much damage to the grass. Been in a couple city parks recently and below is what I've found to date. Most of this came from my own yard!

quarters-24
dimes-36
nickels-6
pennies-196 (memorial)
pennies-10 (wheats) 1917D, 1928, 1940, 1944, 1945, 1955D, 1956D, 1956D, 1957D, 19??D.
pennies-1 (canadian)
large cent-1 1852
and a token from around the 30's or 40's "B.WARD BEAM'S" "World Champion Daredevils" also has the Lord's Prayer on the back.
and a ton of other misc. stuff!

I was definately hooked after finding the Large cent in my own backyard!

Welcome to the hobby and Forum, johnowill.

Your yard is really not that usual for a piece of ground in an area that had lots of people traffic.

I have such a place I've hunted on and off for the past 5 years or so. This year was my best year yet at that site.

In the future if you can move up in a detector, get one of the mega deep machines and you'll be shocked at what you find in your yard. You found a large cent which means you probably have seated and maybe even bust type coins buried there as well. Those seated and bust dimes, etc., often run 6 to 9 inches deep. I didn't use to know this myself but have recently come to understand this.

But meanwhile your current machine is also a very good one. It will most likely find 90% of what is in your yard.

Best to you.

Johnowill,

You're off to a great start. Congratulations on the large cent!

Welcome to TreasureNet. The only treasure forum you'll need. ;)

Yes, but everyone knows those cheap Bounty Hunter detectors are no good ! They're so bad I only have two in my armory! ;) Great start! In fact, you deserve an Excellent! Monty

Thanks for all the great responses and the welcoming me to the site! I find myself checking on here everyday now, and looking at everyones great finds just keeps me excited that someday I too will hit it big. I've been looking around for sites to hunt. So far it's either been my own yard or the public parks. Was told last Friday that I was not allowed to hunt in the parks of a nearby city.....that sucks! I enquired to the local county park district and they reponded that metal detectors were not allowed there either. Need to get the nerve up to start asking some private land owners. I have found maps showing about 30 sites in the county of where old one room school houses once stood. Most of these are in crops right now, it's just a matter of locating the owners now. Wish me luck! I'm hooked now and can't get enough.....lol

We've all run into that John. Your best bet is to get up the nerve andd ask for permission to hunt the fields you've identified as places where the schoolhouses used to stand. I also hunt public beaches and parks but have never been hassled. Old walkways and paths are also a good bet. I found my first coin cache along a river walk on just my 2nd day metal detecting about 16 months ago. I've been hooked ever since!

On a serious note ;D ;D........If you found all that in just your yard, I'd seriously be asking to hunt my neighbors yards! Looks like that is a prime neighborhood.
To the person with the Prism II......That's not a bad beginners detector or so I am told, so don't give up so quick. The best detector in the world isn't going to do you any good if you are putting your coil where the treasure ain't! I suggest you choose better hunting sites, maybe do a little research and good things will come your way. Monty

:) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)Nice finds so far

Nice amount of finds for just starting-- way ahead of Me on coins!!!WTG
Getting permission is My problem also. My own property and playgrounds have been a mainstay so far.
Hoping to change that soon!!
