I was debating on where to go detecting at after work since I depleted a lot of the easy spots around me. I decided instead to try out my privy probe I bought earlier this summer in my parents garden that they just cleared of all the plants. It is right on the property line towards the back of the house. I was probing and felt the "glass" pieces and it was easier to stick all the way into the ground so I decided to dig there. Well an hour and a half later and about 5ft down I found some intact bottles and a couple other interesting items before I had to cover the hole at dark. I found 3 intact bottles and one I think I broke which was a paul jones 1906 bottle. I think that was whiskey. The clear ones are pretty ordinary. I need help identifying the black pipe thing. Maybe part of a clay pipe? And the other item that I was believed used for sewing. I can read "USA" on it and before that there is a makers mark I believe. Which looks like a small "o" with a backwards "C" facing it. I don't know if I'll be able to dig tomorrow because of the weather but I'll update this thread if I find more. Thanks for any help.

I have a lot of old history around me I would love to find older bottles but it's hard to pin point the locations of older homesteads let alone bottles under the ground haha. I'm heading to school Sunday or Monday so hopefully I can finish up this privy. I'm moving out of state (where I don't know yet) in December, but hopefully I can continue to metal detect and bottle dig wherever I go!

Cool finds hopefully you can sell some of the bottles and help u move. I know my privy location but my wife says more remodeling needs done before I go dig a big hole in the yard. Thanks for sharing

Good job on the dig, I'm not sure but I believe you can go pretty deep on one of those digs, the deeper you go the older your finds. Have you been scanning with a metal detector as you go? I have seen pix of guys on this site showing them 15- 20 ft down, kind of scary but it also shows the incredible finds they scored. I would love to do a privy dig just at my age and physical condition I always opt for the easier 3-4 inch plug! Keep digging deeper, I think your doing great on your intact finds and believe you will find much more if you keep digging. Good work, thanks for sharing.

Nice finds. Are you using a probe? And odds are there could be more then one privy on the property.

thanks I'm going to do my best to get as much as I can out. At about 6ft down I hit water from a spring or the water table so I don't want to go much deeper. I'm getting great things from the sides so I'm going to expand and then get the whole hole at 6ft. Thanks for looking!

yes I am. I got lucky that this one wasn't covered. My garage takes up most of the "yard" now and next to the garage is this garden. My neighbor has a house built in 1857 and I think I know where hers is at the only thing I'll need is time sometime this fall to do it.

I'm hoping for some older bottles that are worth some money. I keep or give my finds away especially older bottles that aren't rare or worth much. People appreciate them more than just sitting in a box some where. If I stick with the company I'm with now they pay 5k for relocation, I'd be lying if I said I haven't been thinking about buying scuba gear and trying my luck with that haha. Well see what happens, but one thing for sure is that I love my hobby of digging history and it won't be stopping any time soon. I hope you find great things in your privy (something nobody said in 1900).

My modest day 3 finds. I dug 3 hours today mainly to expand the hole. I dug down to the start of the trash level and had some finds. I'm looking forward to digging either tomorrow or Sunday which will be my last day digging I have to get back to school Monday. I really like the hires rootbeer extract bottle it has embossing on all sides (made in Philly). I also found a smaller bottle and three clay marbles. I'll keep you posted on my final finds when I dig next! Thanks for looking.
