My First Readable Colonial......1736'

Ty and I first started this rainy morning out at an old 1700's house that we have pounded pretty hard,a few old coin's and relic's by Ty and that was about it,a little CW break......I got a few keeper's but nothing like this afternoon's hunt!!!! Brand Spanking New Spot.....1740 House......Pouring down rain pretty much all day here,I even had to "bag" the detector for a couple hour's.We probably only hunted a hour and a half maybe before it let loose again!!!! But here it is,my First and Dateable "old" Copper....I think a 1736....Cloud Nine Baby!!!!! Soaking in mild detergent and some luke warm water until I can figure out how to "revive" this thing.....Thank's for Looking and HHx2 !!!!!

If my reply posts twice, sorry...but dont see the recent post so trying again. I still see it as a 56 in the pic, but going with civilman's positive claim that is it a 36, I still cannot find record of this coin...and an enhanced view of Murrays photos shows the same issue I had with mine...the bust is concave in one and convex in the other...

Without looking at the vaireites of KGII< it could be a counterfeit, not as many KGII halfpennies were counterfeits like the KGIII were but I believe up to as high as 40% of those in the Colonies were..............

Weighing it would be the easiest way to tell on that coin, if below say 130 grains or so, most likely counterfeit, but not a certainty going by weight alone.

Interesting.....these old coins are not that easy to identify. Also, didn't realize how many counterfeits there were back then....

So, which is worth more the "real" deal or the counterfeit?

So, which is worth more the "real" deal or the counterfeit?

I read somewhere online a few weeks ago that it was legal to counterfeit copper coins back then but if you was caught counterfeiting precious metal coins the punishment was death...

His KGII is a Regal one, if it were a counterfeit, it would have a possible interest from a collector, but as a Regal, not hardly. It is the counterfeits that are collected in the colonial KGII and KGIII's......
But for us who find them detecting, we love em all.......

Hey Joe buddy, I haven't signed on in a few weeks but decided to tonight and I see you found yourself a very NICE King George Copper That one still has some great definition to it and not as badly worn as many that we see on here. Thats a super find buddy and the green patina on it looks great. I'm sure all that rain probably helped you locate it abit easier as it prob made it alittle more conductive.......looking at the bright side of things Congrats my friend.

This is probably going to be the best that I can do as far as clean-up without damaging it and keeping the green patina that it has.Soap and water with a little help from a toothpick was all that was used.This one is for my Dad who passed away yesterday morning......Say a small Prayer for him if you can.Thank's

The laws in Britain were not always the same as the laws in the colonies. It is my understanding that most merchants were aware that the coins they were accepting were counterfeit. Due to the shortage of coins, they simply looked the other way and accepted them.
