Hello Everyone,

I'm so happy right now. :icon_cheers: One coin that has eluded me since I've been detecting was a seated dime. After digging nearly 1000 silver coins in the past two years, I can finally say, I GOT ONE!! :blob6: It's an 1873, no mint, with arrows. I'm glad I got to share this coin find today with my buddy, Mike(Ratman). He put me right in the area to find that coin. Thanks, Mike!!

I never expected to find a seated coin today. After digging 3 silver dimes and 11 wheaties from the turf, I told Mike, jokingly, "Okay, Mike, let's go find some barbers". He took me to an area where he's had some luck in the past, and my very first signal in that spot produced the seated dime.

I ended the day with 4 silver dimes, and 11 Wheaties. Man, I sure did the happy dance after finding that coin.....I think Mike did too. :laughing3:

This is a perfect ending to a detecting year that I am very content with!!

Thanks for looking!!
Keep the Passion High!!

HH,

Dan

Historical Significance of Arrows on the Seated Liberty Coins:

From what I've researched, it looks like the US mint, in 1853 and then in 1873, changed the weights of each denomination of its silver coinage. In 1853, the silver dime's weight was changed from a previous 41 grains (2.7 grams) to 38 grains(2.5 grams). Then in 1873, the seated dime's weight was increased from 38 grains to 39 grains. Why did they decide to leave the arrows on a couple years after 1853, followed by one year after 1873, I do not know. :icon_scratch:

awsome find. best of luck.

Wow Dan that's a milestone for you and I couldn't be more happy for a dedicated detectorist. Sorry I didn't respond sooner. I haven't been on the site for a little while. I haven't even found one Seated coin this year. Probably because the sites we hit date to 1800 or earlier.Congratulations dude. :icon_sunny:

Congratulations on that first Seated Dime! I would be happy to..........After digging a thousand silver coins in the last two years and finally finding one is great. But the sad thing is , you might have to dig another (1000) holes before you find the next!!! lolol.........

WTG! Lets hope its alot less! Keep on Digging!

The Seeker

Thanks, Seeker!! I hope I don't have to wait that long before the next seated, but the way it is over here, that's a definite possibility.

great digs! I have hit 2 in my detecting career... the first one was the most memorable.. an 1887s... I hit it last yr on Thanksgiving day.... it made #50 silver for the yr.... I saw the back first and thought that I had hit a barber.... I danced like crazy..... then I calmed down and thought id flip it over and see what yr my "barber" was...... I nearly fell over when I saw the front....... I had only saw pix of the seated dimes...... I danced even crazier then.. the cows in the field where I was even stopped grazing to check out my mad dancing skills.....my 2nd was at 1878 and it was black like yours in places.... the first one was totally silver congrats man!!!!!!!!!

Randy

Thanks, Randy!! Thanks for sharing your "seated" stories to me. Everyone I find will produce a "Happy Dance" from me.....and a whole lot of hollering!! ::) :tongue3: :tongue3:

awesome find dan very happy for you !!

i have a similar thing going here for me - i've found every silver dime: bust, seated, mercury, roosevelt .... everyone except BARBER !!!!

Thanks, Kevin! Wow, are you still looking for your first Barbie Dime? I thought you had found it already. Well, I'm still missing the "Bust". Rarer than hen's teeth in my neck of the woods.
Good luck!!

WTG Dan. HH Ron

Thanks, Ron! Appreciate it! I hope you get a chance to go detecting in your area when the weather lets you.

Sweet find and what a way to end 2008.

Congrats on your first, that is incredible.

What's next on your list of unfound items?
Rob

Thanks, Rob! What's next? I think a seated quarter is next! Or a Half Dime. Or a Gold Coin. ::)

Dan, just looking at that dime gives me chills.

WTG
Nat

Thanks, Nat! Yeah, it still gives me the chills too. Everytime!!

Hey man big congrats.

I know the fealing when I found my first one. I thought I'd never find a seated coin. I was finding around one or 2 seated coins on avg per yr. I didn't hit any seated coins this yr. They are really great coins. That's a nice one you got.

If you get to more turn of the century sites you'll probably find more. You know already that they did lose coins 20 to 30 yrs later than the date.

HH Jer

Thanks, Jer. Surprising you didn't get a seated this year, with all your old hunting sites. I'm only averaging 1 a year with all the silver/deepies I dig. They are very rare in S. Cal.

Those Seateds are nice to find aren't they?

Got my first just over 2 weeks ago and now the snow and freeze is here. Hoping for a break in the weather to find another.

Always enjoy looking at your finds there Cap't

HH
DJH

Thanks, DJH ! Congrats on your first Seated!! Stay warm!

Awesome! Congratulations. I can't wait to find my first. looks good enough too.

Thanks, LostLake! Wait til you find one....you'll be doing the "Happy Dance". ;D

Dan,

Major congrats on your find!!! No one deserves it more than you. I can't wait to get out there next year. If I can have a fraction of the success that you have had in the past two years, I will be extremely satisfied! You have inspired me more than you can know!

HH,

Dr. Ace

Thanks, Bruce! I can't wait to see how you will do with your new machine next year. It should be a fun ride. Patience and persistence will win in the end. Take your time to learn your new machine and have fun!!
