Amazing & Rare 1848 Seated Liberty Quarter

Headed back to an 1855 home today. We’d been there once before pulling a total of 8 silver Rosie, Merc and barber dimes. After about four hours and not a single silver today. I decided to detect the driveway edge back to the car for drink. On the way I hit a mid-80’s on the 900 at a depth of 2 inches. I assumed it would be a clad quarter so I used my hand digger and this coin flipped out. Caked in dirt and shared it with a friend and carefully sprayed it clean.

Later I was amazed to find just how rare this one is.

The 1848 Seated Liberty quarter is a scarce and highly collectible coin with a low mintage of just 146,000 pieces. Struck only at the Philadelphia Mint

Only 2 inches down. Amazing !
Give your coin careful inspection. It's hard to tell for sure, but your coin has signs (the "4" especially) of the 1848/1848 Overdate). Good luck. Great coin find nonetheless.

Great find! As a dedicated collector of Seated 25c, I'm pleased to agree with you that it's a very scarce date and not likely to turn up as a metal detecting find. Most collectors of Seated 25c have a hard time finding an 1848 quarter that fits in their set. Many of them were presumably melted down in 1853 when the weight of quarters was reduced. All of the 1848-1852 issues are scarcer than their mintages indicate.

Embarrassingly, I've collected Seated 25c since the late 1990s, but I have yet to dig one up with my detector, not even a common date!

I'm thinking get it graded. What do you think?

I wouldn't get it graded, in the condition it's in it would be a $200 to maybe $300 coin and that's if it didn't get labeled as "Environmental Damage" and or "Cleaned" either will bring down the value, then if you deduct the cost of having it graded + insurance you've lost a great deal of value that you would otherwise have if you offered it for sale as is, if you choose to sell it.

I've never found a seated coin....that find is amazing!
