Hi people,

My grandad tells me that his rock is a meteorite - he bought it off someone over 50 years ago but I'm a bit sceptical as it looks a bit too shiny to be a typical looking meteorite I think. However, it is magnetic and heavy for its size, maybe 2kg.

What do you people think?

I agree, very shiny. Posted your photo for you ---

I have a small rock like that and I have been interested in knowing what it might be as well

Your scepticism is well-founded. I would be sure that's a chunk of pyrite (albeit a rather nice and very large chunk). Terrestrial mineral, not meteoritic.

If iron pyrite, try burning it a little. Sulfur should be given off. If meteorite, no sulfur,.

I can't say for sure but it sure is a cool looking rock.

Steve
