Long Island N.Y.
Detector(s) used
Minelab X-Terra-50, Whites classic 2
In NYS they now charge $20.00 to get a license. Used to be free.
Now I detect without one.
If asked, I simply tell the cop I left it at home. Never a problem.

What we are doing is nothing more than a hobby and in my opinion no license should be required.(but if so it should be free)I see people at the beach all the time flying kites, surfing, boogie boarding, snorkeling, etc.
To these people, this is their hobby, and no license is required, so why single out the metal detectors?

Just my opinion.

Hi,Cody

I was wondering if you had any link/info on this licensing to md thing, this is the first post from a NY'r I've seen saying this.

Sorry this is such an old topic, but I'm with UnEarthed. I've never even heard of a metal-detecting license in NY.

And, question that's bound to lead to more questions, how old does one have to be to acquire an MD'ing license?

is there a Test ?

do you have to know what Juice & roundage Mean ?

lol, don't forget you have to know how to make side-bets with your hunting partner.

I think you only have to have a License=Permit to hunt in NYC. and Long Island.... down that way,im in South Central N.Y. and thats not the case here.no permit needed here.

Some State and County lands require a permit...Here in Syracuse, a lot of the State parks require a permit that is $10 per park sometimes...Most County land requires a permit, but it is free...NY City Parks require a permit.

HH,
