I have been detecting around a castle built in 1107, there was also a town just below the castle with over 50 homes and a church. The castle has seen 3 major battles and was destroyed three times. It burned down for the last time in 1750 due to a lightning strike. They decided to move the town down hill about 500 meters and dismantled what was left of the town including the castle to rebuild downhill. Detecting here is a challenge and I feel lucky to find one keeper after a 2-3 hour hunt other than square nails. Here’s a picture of the castle ruin, you can also see several cellar holes and they are everywhere, the detector mobile is also in there, the castle is easily accessible especially with a 4X4.
The back side of the castle, several cellar holes and foundations are here as well. I found a cross bow bolt tip upper right area today, the terrain is very rough but that’s where I have been detecting. I’m not sure if the targets are really deep or the place is hunted out but I think the finds are just deep.
A cool tree I saw on another hunt, only found a musket ball but the hunt was full of adventure.
Here’s the finds with a few finds from other recent hunts. Four finger rings from the 1800s, a paint tag I believe from the 1700s and badge. Found the badge at a sports complex along with 32 Euros in coins. The badge translates to “Visiting the German Parliament day”
Four religious pendants, found the far left and far right pendants at the castle and they both have St George slaying the dragon images on them. The dragon was actually a crocodile that nested up in the towns watering hole, St George killed it and saved the day.

9 silver coins dating from early to mid 1800’s, upper left I am not sure as it needs cleaned, found it at the castle, lower left is a tiny copper coin with a readable date of 1696 and is a single sided coin.

Found this beautiful seal matrix ring Friday at the edge of a cellar hole, I believe it was a small church. There were three targets in the hole within 6” and the ring was close to 8” deep, actually found the ring first, then a piece of aluminum and an ox shoe. The seal has the initials H.O. a heart with crossed arrows and three flowers above the heart. I would think the seal ring dates to pre 1750 when the town burned down but it does have a later look to it. Any help? Here’s the seal.

And the stamp it makes. One of my favorite finds as it is very personal to one individual and probably the only one of its kind.
Saturday was going slow, only dug a few square nails after 1.5 hours so I went a little extreme and headed for the steep incline leading up to one of the castle towers. Had a nice signal though a little broken, started digging and hit rocks, had to take apart the rocks like a puzzle, about 8” I found this cross bow bolt tip. I believe it dates to around 1200-1400 AD or possibly from the 30 years war that would date to the early 1600’s. It was an exciting find.

And another picture. I detected again today, a foundation lower from the castle and town. I determined it was a barn as it was at least 50 meters long and a good 12 meters wide. Found 4 ox shoes inside the foundation and a small silver coin from 1848 just on the outside of the foundation. Also spent about 30 minutes on a grass field near the foundation and found a buckle from around the 1400’s. I hunted about 8 hours at the castle site this weekend and was very happy with the few finds found, it is a tough site to hunt. HH, Mike
