my modem mayhem!

OK, I installed the 5TH modem& it blew! and the pci slot isn't working now either! on both 'puters! I even bought a new surge protector & plugged the phone line into that, & it still died! I just bought an external modem & am hoping this will help. Dial up is not only slow, but it's a royal pain in the patootie!! I am sooooo happy to be back on-line & read everyones thrilling adventures. & I am soooooooo thankful for this site!

Suggestion,

Might try having someone do a volt check on your phone line to make sure the off-hook voltage is correct & the ringing voltage isn't over (if memory serves me) 28v = ringing voltage. If they're over, phone company might owe you for a couple modems.

I've actually seen an instance where the power line going into a house was faulted. It was putting 70v at a bunch of amps into the neighbors cable line. Nobody wanted to do anything until the cable pad (connecting post) caught fire at the street. Telco ended up buying everyone on the block modems cable boxes etc. whether they needed them or not.

I do too! That would make me mad, I would have thrown it out the door! (not really, but i would of been mad enough to!)

I've had Hughes satellite (signed the two year contract) and used my two years, but immediately opted for 'mobile broadband'. This is a high speed wireless (phone company) solution that fit my needs and my area.

I don't know the coverage in south east Missouri, but in north central Kentucky it's the best option available to me. I've been able to download at up to 1.5 meg speeds with this wireless solution.

The other plus is latency which is up to half a second delay with satellite is much less with the mobile broadband solution. I have mine from Sprint.com, but there are many other providers.

If your PC is new enough, you can get a USB card to plug directly into the machine, removing all the external wire connections except power.

I will check SEMO coverage for my provider and let you know via PM if they have high speed coverage in your area. (I'll send a PM.)

I never have used Hughes so am glad you were able to give accurate information on it.
