Well, we went traipsing to the beaches today, and I found this. I have been beach combing here for more than a year, and this is the first one I have found. Very excited. I know it isn't shiny, like the stuff I like to find, but it'll do. ;D

Sorry, I was so excited to post it, I forgot to finish typing everything, lol.

it is a Japanese Float. It is hand-blown glass, so it is airtight. They are attached along side nets for fishing. There are lots of old ones just floating out in Pacific, and some newer ones too. They are still used by the fishermen around the island, but this appears to be an older one. The newer ones have a seam where you can tell it was done by a machine, instead of hand blown. A real good find are the ones that are about the size of a basketball, with the netting attached. I have found the netting before, which is kinda disappointing, as the globe inside was shattered on the rocks. I found two more pieces of other globes that appeared to be a similar size on the same beach, so this is a place I will certainly be back too!

I have been a little tenative doing MD'ing here, as there is unexploded ordiance still around. I myself have found an old grenade on one of our trips, just the outer parts, none of the "boom" parts were left.

There some public beaches here I will prob hit up for coin/jewelry, but they are groomed on a regular basis, so it really isn't much of a thrill for me. Although....I wouldn't mind finding a few 500yen coins(about 4.50 US)
Thanks for looking!!

vegasmtl,

I was stationed at Kadena AFB in the late 60's during the Viet Nam War. I use to walk the beaches just East of the Airbase and found old WWII items, mostly 30 and 50 cal brass, but other items too. Do you ever search there?

Interesting find, congrats! HH, Mike

Now that I know it's not a bowling ball, I can say this: That's a really neat find! ;D

I detected quite a few places on Okinawa, spending four years there!! Hit those beaches in the northern part of oki!! Should be able to score a few gold and silver rings!!

That brings back old memories, may dad was stationed in Japan around 1960 and he brought back several of those of various sizes. I remember they hung in the corner of the den from the ceiling in fishing nets.

Cool find

I was stationed at Zukeran in 87 and had taken my Whites over there with me. I think I had the 6000 Di series 3 at the time. I remember taking it to Kadena and looking around and find a couple of silver, several 100 yen coins and a bunch of 10 yen coins. I also took it to a dependents housing area south of Zukeran (they were doing some remodeling) and found several silver there. You might want to hit some of these areas when you get a chance.

Very neat and interesting find, WTG!!!
Thanks for sharing, Continued Good luck, & Happy hunting~

Three years on Courtney netted me quite a few Mercs, another year at Futema, had a few more Mercs. Lots of silver still to be found as well as a ton of clad. Most of those bases have seen little in the way of a detector!! The Japanese vacation on those Northern beaches and alot of opportunity for some high kt gold. Those beaches are packed. Not hard to get a license or a car, and drive up there every chance you get. If not there, then head to any base you want. If you get a chance to go to Korea, Air Force bases there as well as some sweet beaches(packed) to detect as well!! Good Luck!
