My OLD Native American Friend - What is your average?

During my active THing years I averaged about 10 Indian Head cents per season.

Finding one was always a delight. There's that sudden little RUSH when you realize it's not just another MEM or Wheatie.

About how many Indians do you average a year?

last year I hit a very small 14K gold ring. to me that is my highlight so far.

I've found my IHs mostly by old houses. Also new houses built on the exact spot where an old house once stood. At one such place I dug 5 or 6 Indians within inches of the basement walls.

It depends on condition. Like with any coin there are rare dates but a common Indian with detail like the photo I posted can bring up to $50 on ebay. In badly worn condition one would be lucky to get $1.

yes, they're out there you just have to hunt the older sites.

And too, IHs were in circulation much longer than most people think. My folks owned a sports shop back in the early 50's and Indian Head pennies came in all the time. By the late 50's they were very scarce. But people do occasionally find one even today (usually badly worn).

This is true not only of IHs but it's true of many obsolete silver coins. In the early 60's standing liberty quarters, Mercs, etc., were common in change.

funny how common things are just that, and 50 years later they are a prize to be found. that is when you wished the parents put back about $100 rolls of pennies to sit and maybe gain value lol

I usually pass over those kinds of signals unless they are deeper or I'm hunting an old yard. I find maybe a dozen IH's a year, have found 1864, 66, 67, 68, etc, a little xtra-special if in nice shape. IH signals can be shallow too at 2-3".

I have only found 2 of them, both on the same day about a year ago.

Most of the Indian cents I've found gave weak signals and were on the deep side. This was due to land fill over the years. If one can find an untouched area where lots of people gathered 100+ years ago one will find them a couple inches deep. In such a place I found a large cent on the surface. One day I dug 7 or 8 in a small area about 4x6 feet.
