I went back to the woods that have yielded some nice couns over the years but no coins that are particularly old (1920s, max). Found an area with several clean 80-81 signals on the ATP, but they were all Memorial Lincolns.

Last signal was 87-88 so I figured it was a quarter, but it was a 1730 King George II halfpenny instead. I thought it was a Large Cent right out of the ground (pre/post cleaned below):

Now that's old. well done.

Man that's sexy

Fantastic find! Some surprising detail considering the age.

Nice coin......looks like you're in the right area for some other older goodies!!

Luckily the reverse (with date) is relatively nice looking. I've found wheats that are 200 years younger in the same area that've looked worse (not sure how that all works).

I have one of those with a date of 1737, but I'm wondering if it was used by the colonies or just by the Brits that came over. Not in the same realm as NJ, Connecticut, or Mass. coppers I don't believe. Awesome find!

Congrats! Just reminds us to dig it all because you never know!

I read a web article about an well documented Archeology dig of a very early 1700s tavern site in Pennsylvania. They found a LOT of coins and most were good enough to ID and date. From that site, it seems like the colonies did use all sorts of coins, especially English coppers. Interesting that they also found a large percentage of counterfeits...even they were surprised it seemed.

Cool! Some pirate could have once owned that! :treasurechest::icon_pirat:-Yar!

Wow! Thats quite a time leap to your oldest copper! Congrats!

I am amazed the date is that clear.

Very nice..

I dug a Coin??? that has a similar seated figure with a date under a line about 10 days ago, but have not cleaned it yet, that was just the details I could see right after being dug, non reed'ed edge.
But
This was found in NW Atlanta ??

Hope you find more cool old Stuff.
Davers

Very nice and early KG2. Congrat

Awesome!!! I've found many of these and NONE of them had detail THIS GOOD!

Sweet old copper recovery! :occasion14:

Congrats on digging that beauty. :occasion14: I dream of joining the 1700's club someday.

What a great coin, and from the early 1700's to boot! That's why I'm such a big fan of hunting in the woods...you never know when you're going to come across something really old. Well done.
