My oldest US silver

Had a welcome surprise of another Tnet member stopping by to detect in Baltimore County.

Many acres we shared with meanderings looking for relics.

Gary came away with a hemweight, flat button, brass D buckle, musketball, drawer pull, and a '54 rosie as keepers.

I had a surprise find: my first silver from this site and it turned out to be seated, an 1838 dime!

Did manage to dig some pistol balls, but not a button today; they eluded me.

Certainly great to share the afternoon with a fellow Tnetter!

Thanks Tom! Found about 25 miles due west of Tudor Hall, the family home of John Wilkes Booth, who was born in 1838.

Thanks Jamie! I see you have a seated as your avatar; certainly a rare find. I didn't know that 1838 was the first year coins were minted in New Orleans. Mine's a Philadelphia mint.

Thanks Art! Just found out that the one headstamp "WRA Co RIVAL" is an old one: 1888-1897; it's primer was never hit.

Thx Trezurehunter! I thought the date read 1888, but we discovered after the video that it's 1838.

Thx Relicific! It's definitely "period". Found it about 50 yards from where I dug an 1832 LC a few weeks ago. Property is purported to have had a home site from as early as 1825.

Thx Chizzy! Gary and I had PMd regarding hunting activities and I think he headed out on a hunch that I'd be at the farm site, so when I saw this guy walking toward me (he'd left his gear back at his vehicle) I thought it was one of the admin folks checking out what I was doing. Not so.

Thx Argentium! My first impression (out of the ground) was AU, but then you get the dirt off and the slight wear shows, so I agree with your assessment of XF. Of course, this is a dug coin and cannot received an "official" grade.

Hi Nick. Yes, it turned out to be a sort of double bonus, "old" and "well-preserved". Well we never expect this sort of a find, but we keep digging. The results don't lie.

Thanks L-D! You're right. It turned out to be a true "win-win" on a really excellent hunting day. This morning brought snow and 20 mph gusts.

Gorgeous Silver, seated coins are hard to come by but to find one in that condition is unbelievable.
